How to Save Money at Dr. Kafai Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recommend this clinic to everyone. My kitty Bijou is currently experiencing chronic urinary blockage and needed to be seen last minute (as this is usually an emergency). My regular vet was away on a training and left us some referrals to 24/7 clinics (with steep and discouraging estimates, considering we do not have insurance). + Dr. Kafai is easy to contact, clear about his next steps/ assessment, has a warm and pleasant manner. He even brought me to the back to show me where Bijou was staying, and the crystals/ stones causing the blockage. + Staff and techs are friendly and helpful. + Rates/ costs are competitive with other clinics (I'd called around for emergency services and was able to compare). + Facility is clean and organized. You can tell the staff, techs, and Dr. Kafai love the animals they attend to. After leaving my kitty with them, I felt relief knowing he was in their hands. Bijou is getting a second chance because we rolled the dice on this clinic. Thank you Dr. Kafai and staff.

We had an excellent experience with Dr. Kafai! We brought in our 3 year old male cat, Moo, in an emergency on Wednesday night due to a suspected urinary blockage. Dr. Kafai was very helpful and calming right away. He was excellent with Moo, and very thorough and clear in explaining each step of his care to us. At each step he told us what he was doing and why, allowed us to come with him wherever Moo was taken, and ensured we understood and agreed to all procedures and their costs before proceeding. The prices for the care Moo received were actually lower than we expected, and very fair and on par with what I have experienced at other veterinary clinics. We ended up leaving Moo over night for additional monitoring, and the following morning Dr. Kafai followed up with us promptly and we were able to take Moo home. He has also been available for any follow up questions and concerns as we continue to monitor and care for Moo, which is very comforting at this time. The location itself is also very spacious, clean, and organized. I would definitely recommend Dr. Kafai for emergency or regular veterinary care!

Amazing clinic, I recommend them to all my friends and the ones who’ve switched have had nothing but good things to say about these guys. Friendly staff, great vets, super clean and well priced. Dr Kafai himself is awesome, whether morning or night he always greets me with a smile and ready to help. My cat is staying there overnight right now but they treat him as if he’s their own pet so I’m not overly worried about him getting stressed out. Highly recommend them.

I’m not sure there is so many negative reviews and I don’t even know if I trust them, people are always unhappy. BUT….my experience at this clinic was amazing. My dog hurt his leg and couldn’t walk on without crying. It was the only clinic that said they will see us. Everyone was sooo super friendly and helped our anxiety. From the moment we walked in we were greeted by the owner of the practice and Dr. Mir Habib was pleasant from the moment he met our little guy. He did a thorough exam on our little pup. The assistant was super nice caring as well. THE ENTIRE TEAM WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND. We are sooo happy we found them. I can’t find the words to say about how grateful we are that they were able to see my little guy and help us out when we were so stressed out. It’s the first injury our dog had and with his CH we always try to make sure he’s safe. But anyways THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR EVERYTHING.

Close With Carmella

These are the last pictures I have of my cat Nano and Dr. kafi locked us out of the clinic that I made an appointment for, even though it was an emergency. I called in the am and they told me they can’t see till 6. Nano already Wasmt walking straight and non-responsive no eating drinking, etc…he was dying. I’ve had many animals and you know the look in their eyes is different when they aren’t well. I was still patient enough to accept the appointment. even though this is an emergency clinic and I had an emergency. Nano was totally fine 48 hours before. I waited all day outside the backyard with my cat, anxiously waiting for 6:00pm. When it was 6, I got Nano in the car and that ride was hard enough for him. He hasn’t been in a car in over 11 years, and all while he’s sick too? I was waiting outside with my cat and I had to call the office . I was told they cannot see me tjat they had an emergency surgery. I was so defeated. I almost knew there was going to be a problem with this clinic. (I took my 7 y/o dog here last year and I basically spent $4-5 k for her to sit on a hard floor with an IV in her for a week. Im not so sure they tried everything they could do tbh looking back. A week later I had paid for them to put her to sleep after one last night home with me). I remember him telling me how he is so overwhelmed and overworked. Right then and there, I was questioning how safe it was to be looking after someone’s loved ones when he was basically saying he’s burnt out. I suggested he hire some other doctors to help . I guess he didn’t as today proved he was not prepared nor professional. Why Coukdnt I have just walked in this morning like the dog owners did? My cat was dying and all I wanted was some pain meds to help him go in peace. I was visibly upset when he was on the phone with me while I was kicked outside his facility, while holding my sick cat. I did not swear, I did not abuse anyone. I recorded it as I know they admin will write a counter comment denying everything that happened. I asked them why they could not have the decency to even call me to tell me that I am now not allowed to come because someone took precedent over me, perhaps surgery equals more money to him and that’s why they didn’t even bother to call. I just have an “old cat”. They said they didn’t have enough time to call me to tell me they can’t see Nano anymore. 😞 I felt horrible and hopeless. I failed as a cat mom. I grew up with Nano the past 15 years and now he’s probably gone off in the bushes to pass on in nature. I let him be free in Gods earth, where I know he loved being the most. I did try calling the other emergency clinic in Richmond hill but of course they are closed for two days, opening tomorrow. If Nano even makes it through the night and comes back tomorrow, we’re taking him to Ripleys animal hospital and Yonge and Elgin mills. I used to take all my animals there was was treated with compassion. And Dr. Ripley really cares about them. Only reason why I came here is because it was for emergency and it’s closer to my home. I should havw stuck with my guns and knew this dr was overworked and burnt out. Im not saying he’s terrible. He is a good person for helping animals but he truly doesn’t care about them. As a past client, he didn’t even think to call me later on after emotions settled to ask if my cat was okay, and they are ready to see Nano. Nothing. Not even an apology. I have it recorder and it was the most inhumane way a person could speak to you when you have a dying animal and they locked you out of your booked appointment. Nano I love you and I hope others look at your pictures and pray your in cat heaven. 🙏💔
