How to Save Money at VCA Canada Alta Vista Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I have brought both my cats here (June 2023, Dec 2024) for breathing issues, one being a critical emergency. Both times, my concerns were attentively listened to and my cats were immediately examined and cared for. During my recent visit, the employees seemed very busy and potentially overworked (they were genuinely running from task to task) but they were so incredibly kind and accommodating - to me and my cats. I saw a dog brought in due to seizures who was set up with an IV in minutes and a cat who ate an elastic which they retrieved in under 30 minutes. A very skilled, caring team. 10/10 recommend bringing your animal here if you have an emergency.

The staff was really great dealing with a medical emergency. My dog was triaged quickly, and I was given informationation on how to proceed. I was kept informed regarding his care. I was given a high-low estimate of the expenses, which was accurate. The staff was really empathetic and reassuring. Many thanks from Bailey and I.

I would like to thank the 2 ladies at reception upon my arrival on the morning September 20th. I was greatly and profoundly touched with their sense of knowing that I was in a state of emotion that I could not control. They and 3 technicians quickly addressed my need and within seconds came to the help of Maggie. The compassionate Vet Dr. was quick to start assessing the condition and making my dog as comfortable as possible under the circumstances. They gave her the best of care and planned the next step to another facility to give the best possible outcome under the distress that Maggie was facing. With great and compassionate advice, we came to the conclusion that it was best to let her go to the rainbow bridge. I am sorry that I can’t remember the names of all that assisted me while in my moment of helplessness, but know that I am full of gratitude. My experience at your clinic was comforting and I can’t thank you enough.

I really appreciate having a 24 hr animal hospital around the corner from us when our cat, Pepper, was sick. We were prioritized and treated with the expediency one would expect during an emergency situation. But also with kindness. Everyone, the receptionists, techs, and doctors, were professional and responsive, day or night. We especially appreciate Dr. Sun who sat with us and patiently explained all the options, and Dr. Jones who performed the surgery. Being able to visit Pepper daily was also a blessing. My only notes for improvement are to have an option for "no music/messaging" when on hold; to not leave anyone on hold for more than 5 min without checking in; to be simple and concise in all discussions - particularly the discharge procedure; and to have quieter "visit rooms" if possible.

We’ve had a very good experience with the Alta Vista Animal Hospital. The first was when our Pomeranian had a heart attack. Unfortunately, he never made it and died, but the vet and staff working that night were incredibly compassionate and supportive. They also gave us a box to bury our beloved dog and didn’t charge us. Today, we went to have a tick that was lodged near our dog’s eye removed. We tried ourselves, but because of the location, it was extremely difficult for us. It was successfully removed by a technician. She was incredibly fast and gentle. We are very grateful to this clinic. Thank you.
