How to Save Money at Bank Street Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Never again. Lack of experience and professionalism, always asking for unnecessary lab tests or blood work to increase your final receipt. If your pet has something more serious than annual vaccination this place is definitely is "not to go" vet clinic. Always very brief check up, sometimes the vet forgets to check the temperature of your pet, teeth or skin condition, doesn't remember your pet's health issues even if you're client for a few years. My dog had an inflamed lump on his neck. He was diagnosed to have an abscess and recommended to take antibiotics without abscess drainage and come back in 7 days if abscess doesn't go away on it's own. In a week after I called to the clinic and made an appointment to drain the abscess. During the appointment I was informed that the dog should be fasting before the surgery (nobody told me how to prepare the dog for the surgery neither the vet on the very first appointment nor the receptionist on the day I called to schedule the surgery). Therefore, I was pushed to inject my dog against vomiting/pooping and pay more to get a surgery or schedule a new surgery a week later! I rejected all, because it's simply life threatening for my dog. I went to emergency care of a real animal hospital where I knew that my dog didn't have an abscess at all!!! But infected fast growing lump needed to cut out and check if it's cancer or not.

I recently visited Bank Street Animal Hospital, and I can't recommend them enough! The staff is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable, making both me and my pet feel welcome and cared for. The veterinarians take the time to explain everything thoroughly and answer all my questions. The facility is clean and well-organized, which gives me confidence in their services. Overall, my experience was fantastic, and I will definitely be returning for all my pet's needs. Five stars all the way!

I had originally taken my dog and cats here, when looking back at their files 2 of my pets had the wrong birthdays in their files. They refused Heartworm prevention after my dog was without it for about 3-4 months suggesting a $160 test. (I ended up going to Alexandria ON and paying $65 for the same test). I was told my dog needed a eye flush for her clogged tear duct, opon further investigation from another vet I was told if I did the $700 eye flush her eye would likely clog again the same week, I asked the same vet about the reconstructive surgery I was suggested (which costs thousands) and she told me they were definitely trying to take advantage of me and that my dog given her situation I could just keep the eye clean and she was fine, she said there was no medical need for this surgery and there was a far greater risk of blindness. This vet also told me if I didn’t do this surgery within 6 months her eye would likely mold or gain infection even with cleanings (this never happened), and when I explained the breeder said it’s normal for puppies to have that of my dog breed (they typically grow out of tear stains) and that is why I didn’t get it checked until around a year, they just wrote in her file “owner said it has something to do with breeder not sure how” this is a common issue with Samoyeds so it’s absolutely insane a vet wouldn’t know that and I had to explain it. When I couldn’t afford to bring my cat back because I was busy with work they wrote that I had said that in my vet file like I didn’t care about my cats well being? It came off as extremely rude. This vet also still supports spaying dogs earlier than needed. Overall I’m ashamed to even have spent money here.

Bank Street Animal Hospital is super understanding and professional. I would highly recommend seeing Dr Rosa Parker! She is the best at handling the pets and also she is patient and walks you through the cost of different treatments. They are also much cheaper than other hospitals in the Ottawa South area

The worst experience of my life. Up until my terrible experience, I had questioned some questionable information they were providing to me. My dog had gotten bitten by a tick, so I decided to have him tested to besure he did not contract lime desease. Please keep in mind they had up until now provided all care to "Sergeant". I had noticed on an earlier visit that Sergeant had a muzzle on. I did not understand this as he had just had surgery and was still groggy. I saw this by accident when the girl went to the back, I saw through the door. There was no need to have him muzzled at that time. I didn't say anything about this. Skip ahead now to when I arrived for a blood test. I arrived along with my adult son. My dog was taken inside as I was waiting in the hallway with others. I could hear my dog was wimpering , not barking. Next an assistant beings him out to me, saying they could not give him the test as he had bitten three people including her. I saw no signs on her that she had been bitten, and I was in shock to hear this. If they put the muzzle on my dog when he was sedated, why not when he is fully awake. I would not have objected to this. I was also embarrassed by the fact the lady said this infront of a group of people. I was advised sergeant needed to take a sedating medication and return him the next day. I was still trying to come to terms with the biting. I agreed to buy the medication and return him the next day. Once I arrived home I was still bothered by what was said to me. I called back to the clinic and ask who my dog bit, how serious it was? Suddenly no one would admit to anything, saying they knew nothing about it. This was just 30 mins of me being there. I ask that when I arrive the next day that I could speak with a manager, it was agreed but never happened. She never came to speak with me. My son went in and held my dog while he received the test, my dog did not get sedated from the medication and never made any attempt to bite anyone while my son was there. I knew now that they had lied to me as they did not have the patients to tend to him with kind hands. It was easier just to accuse him of biting. I have now found a compassionate clinic for my baby. While the request was made for his medical records, the new clinic was informed I had an agressive dog. They were so supprised that in fact he was the complete opposite . The vet came out and took the time to tell me what a nice dog I had and he could not understand why #bankstreetanimalhospital would say otherwise. All I can say is don't trust, their front is fake and you have no idea what they are doing to your animal behind close doors. I did eventually speak with the manager, she was less than sorry for my experience. I informed her that I would be filing a complaint. She did say she did not know who said to the dog bit three people. She said they have a high turnover of staff. I wonder why, I guess its a management issue.
