How to Save Money at Vanier Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
My dog and I have been clients of this clinic for a year and have visited many times. Whether for routine vaccinations or urgent issues, the help from Dr. Butler and all the staff has been above and beyond, always very professional! I'm happy to have this clinic nearby, and my dog loves it and isn't scared to attend. Sometimes they are really busy, so be patient! P.S. Hi from Corgi Bandit!

had the absolute best experience today bringing my cat for the first time. from the first call, i received honesty and transparency which eased my nerves about bringing my cat by, especially as a first time cat parent when costs and procedure can be so unfamiliar and daunting. upon arrival, they immediately set us up in a ‘cat only’ room, and the incredible communication from the staff only got better from here. we felt comfortable asking questions and we were provided with sooo much information and resources to continue to be great (and educated) cat parents! If you are looking for a new vet I cannot recommend Vanier Animal Hospital enough. Thank you team!

Edit: I left the below review (initially 3 stars), which I intended to be constructive and information. However, after leaving this review I got an email from the Vanier animal hospital essentially banning me because of the review I left. Because of this I have decided to lower my rating I have mixed feelings about this vet. I've been taking my two cats to Dr. Butler and her team for roughly three years, and they’ve generally done a good job at a fair price. They’re also great about fitting us in on short notice, which I really appreciate. However, there are a few negatives. Dr. Butler is adamant that cats need weekly baths. I’ve had cats my whole life and have only bathed them in extreme situations. She believes baths can reduce allergies in cats. She suggests giving gabapentin if the cats get too stressed. I called around to other vets in the area to confirm what she had told me (I had never heard of weekly bathings for cats before). All the vets I called said not only do they not recommend weekly baths, but they think it could be harmful for the cats. I tried bathing them once (to give it a fair shot), it was extremely stressful for both me and my cats. When I mentioned this to Dr. Butler and her staff, they seemed dismissive and a bit judgmental. Another concern was with the leukemia vaccine. My cats are strictly indoor, so I was under the impression they didn’t need it, as the virus is typically transmitted between cats in close contact. However, Dr. Butler told me that feline leukemia could be transmitted by visitors who own infected cats coming to my home. Unsure, I went along with her recommendation and paid for the pricey vaccinations. I later called other vets to confirm this. None of them could verify what she had told me, which left me feeling misled. They provide decent care overall, and I will continue to go to them, but I think people should be aware of these potential issues.

Most caring and compassionate team! They've been taking care of my pup for the past three years and helped us through a severe illness last year. I am so grateful for Victoria, Dr. Butler and the whole team who got back to me so quickly, got us an emergency appointment and took great care of my dog. It's so important to have a team that you can trust! I'd very highly recommend this clinic.

Dr. Butler is amazing, cares a great deal about her patients, and isn't afraid to tell someone off for mistreating their pet. She takes advocating for pet's wellbeing very seriously. So many vets want to discuss payment before even looking at the pet, but not them; its very clear that every member of staff loves animals here, and even if they're busy they will make time for your companion if its a time sensitive issue. Sometimes that means they run a bit late, but its well worth the wait knowing that the reason is because they treat their patients just like we would expect to be treated. I would (and have) recommended them highly to family and friends.
