How to Save Money at Yonge Sheppard Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

They go above and beyond to help my pets. I’ve nothing but good this to say about Yonge Sheppard Animal Hospital. Thank you for taking care of Sunny, Figaro, Luke , Chico in the past and now my little Pepè Le Pew.

I called the clinic to find out the price of both vaccinations and spay/neuter. A lady named Halley answered and told me that vaccines are $198 and spay/neuter without the blood test $30 to which in my head I said I misunderstood because English is not my first language and asked her again $30? Three, zero ? And she said yes $30 and I said wow it is very cheap, that is in total it would be around $250 yes? in that she said well if they are our clients sometimes even free (in my head I said they will have free spay/neuter days and they only charge you medicine, that is what happens in my country in some areas) I was very interested, I told him if they could do the two procedures the same day and she said yes, it depends on the doctor how he looks the pet (it was strange because in another vet they had told me that it was a week apart). I called again to ask if it was the same day at last (I had been scheduled for January 2nd) because the next day, December 20th, I could give him the vaccines where I gave them the first time and have them ready for the surgery. Magically an appointment was vacated on Monday 23rd. I decided to wait because she answered me aaa but if so it's time to do blood test and exam to see the doctor before, like two more appointments before the surgery (I needed the surgery fast because I am moving out and I want to take my cat already operated). Today I go to the appointment , they give him his vaccinations and tell me the price for the spaying or neutering. When they gave me the sheet with the prices, they were around 500 without the blood test. When I paid for the vaccines, I asked the lady why they told me something different over the phone, that I had spoken to Halley and she told me $30. I told her it is very weird , isn't it? And she said oh yes, it must have been a misunderstanding. IT WASN'T, I KNOW WHAT I TALKED ABOUT AND ASKED MANY TIMES TO BE CLEAR BECAUSE FOR ME THE PRICE WAS WIERD. My cat needs more procedures than a vaccination but they already lost a client that was going to be for many more years, if your word is not worth and they only excuse that it was a misunderstanding, how we know that it is a serious hospital.

Our Ollie had to have his eye removed. Vet Claire was fantastic in accommodating our urgent needs. She personally spoke with me and went through everything before and after. I could tell she had a genuine love for helping animals and cared just as much about the worried parents feelings. Our vet tech Olivia went above and beyond our expectations before during and after surgery. Her knowledge and caring nature was a breathe of freah air in such a sressful event. I hear the whole team fell in love with our Ollie and we could tell with photo updates he was being loved and spoiled in our absence. Overall the best experience we have had with a veterinary team and would highly recommend them to everyone.

Took my kitten here for an emergency after having positive experiences here with my first cat. They were able to get me an appointment fast, and the staff were so sweet to us in a scary situation. They also explained everything very clearly and were upfront with prices. Thank you to everyone here for helping Remy
