How to Save Money at North Bay Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.
How Do You Choose the Right Pet Insurance Provider?
Pet Insurance Review makes it incredibly easy for pet parents to select an insurance provider they feel good about. You can use our handy comparison tool to get the gist of what a company offers. Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Dr Karl, Missy, Laura and Kenzie are very professional , friendly and caring. We highly recommend this amazing team. We moved to North Bay and needed a vet for our 13 year old chocolate brown lab, Quinn. Dr Karl and his staff were very helpful and provided excellent treatment. Dr Karl was always available to answer our questions , explanations and treatment options. Our grand dog also attends this office as well. Thank you again North Bay animal hospital!

Imagine being a client of this hospital for 10 years and getting zero sympathy at the loss of your dog. A dog that was brought to Dr. Barnes in respiratory distress on a Monday and all she did was bloodwork, even though he was booked for a Senior Wellness appointment that is advertised on their bulletin board to include X-rays. The bloodwork clearly indicated something was wrong, but then she stated - “unfortunately we’re booked solid and the soonest we can see him again is Monday”. That was our 1 minute conversation at 4:02pm Wednesday - no diagnostics were offered on the Wednesday as they are trying to claim. He began to collapse 2 days later and it was then I found out that all our local vets (from North Bay to New Liskeard and Sudbury) have sold their after hours practices to SmartVet, and there are no emergency in-person vets after hours willing to see our animals, the closest place is Barrie. My dog suffered for almost a week and passed away by the Saturday after being seen by Dr. Barnes that Monday. Even though she had a report from the vet in Barrie after he collapsed indicating he was unwell, he had lost weight in those 2 days, and I begged the receptionist to see if he could be seen sooner, Laura curtly advised me that no, they’d see him Monday. He didn’t make it to that appointment. He suffered that whole week with a mass in his lung that was taking up almost 3/4 of his lung, something that could have been caught at his Monday apt. I will not be bringing my cat to this hospital anymore and will be looking at other more caring individuals to meet his needs. I hope north bay vets sleep well at night knowing they’ve sold their services to a company that only provides virtual visits after hours, forcing pet owners to drive to Barrie and hoping their animal doesn’t die en route. **diagnostics were NOT offered to me at the Monday apt nor afterwards, as they claim**

We have been bringing our family pets to the North Bay Animal Hospital for many years now. We have had a flurry of visits over the past few months which made me think to write this review. Our vet is Dr. Karen Barnes and both we and our dogs LOVE to see her but all of the staff and other vets have been truly great. Very happy that we have such an excellent local service provider to support our family.

Highway robbery is all I can say. I am not sure where these people get off charging what they do for services but its just sad how we cannot afford to even buy tick and flea prevention when they charge $800 now for that. Prices have gone up 1000 percent with these people.

TERRIBLE!!! ABSOLUTE GARBAGE!!!! This place has turned my family off of EVER having a pet again!!! But no worries they got their MONEY $3400!! After 25 years of bringing our pets here, I should have driven to Barrie….Buyer Beware!! REPLY BIG THANKS to the reception being forced to reply to this…not sure how you look yourself in the mirror but we all need jobs. Also, I’m pretty sure I know where to find Seymour Ave, North Bay, ON. Listen, RECEPTION, YOU ARE BEING FOOLED BY “WANNABE VETS”!! Saying these idiots are “Doctors” is an insult to everyone, including yourself and they make YOU do the heavy lifting…but that’s their POLICY. I’m SURE you have already seen their complete lack competence and their extreme position about being paid! That day! NO EXCEPTIONS! Not even 2 days later! So, continue doing your job and keep on putting up with their bullying and incompetence, cuz we all need jobs. But I want you to know, they’re letting YOU take the fall for THEIR INCOMPETENCE!
