How to Save Money at Halton Peel Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr. Walters has been our vet for the past 40 years. She is a no-frills farmer’s vet who adores the animals and always has their best interest at heart. Her bedside manner with humans is direct. (Which I appreciate! She is not curt, but she gets right to business.) Her bedside manner with animals shows her love of them and of her profession. (My dog is one to complain when she’s in pain/distressed, but she is always happy to see Dr. Walters and be examined by her.) Dr. Walters is measured in her approach; she is always considerate of what will be the best course of action for the animal’s long-term wellbeing. I feel so lucky that the three dogs I’ve owned in my lifetime have spent their days under her watchful care.

I have been taking my pets to Dr. Janet Walters for more than 15 years. She is a very knowledgeable and caring veterinarian and always displays compassion. She is very passionate about caring for her furry clients... and I have no hesitation in recommending her to anyone looking for a great veterinarian..

I'm sure this is a perfectly fine vet if you're a client, but if you're not don't waste your time going here. I was mistakenly under the impression that "Animal Hospital" was a place to take an animal that was in rather urgent need of medical attention. You know, like a people hospital. If that's also your idea of what an animal hospital should be then this place is not what you're looking for. Our dog tore off her dew claw nail in a frisbee accident, so we took her here as soon as the vet opened to seek medical attention for our dog that was in pain. No help, advice, or compassion for that matter, was found at Halton Peel Animal Hospital. The parking lot was empty, not a client in sight, but she was "too busy" to help. Please change your name, you're a veterinarian that isn't accepting new clients, not an animal hospital.

Before I even got a chance to inquire about my cat the person answering the phone wanted my name. She then asked if I was a client. When I said no she told me "sorry I cannot help you, we're not taking clients". While I understand that may be the case a little caring would have been nice. When I said I needed advice on whether or not it was an emergency she said "sorry I cannot answer any questions" and simply offered me an emergency clinic number in Burlington. I felt brushed off which is unfortunate.

Called for advice as I didn't want my dog to get sick if he came in contact with a dog that had recently had ticks. Wasn't sure so just wanted to ask a professional and because I wasn't a PAYING CLIENT she refused to tell me if my dog was safe or no. These are the places that give VET'S a bad name. Stay away and support others who actually care about animals and customer service.would give 0 stars if I could and probably different language to describe the person who took the call.
