How to Save Money at Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My first visit to the Animal Hospital included two Border Collie x OES girls, both under the age of two. Curious and friendly pups = one overwhelmed Human. The staff was so great, and patient with my.. mild incompetence and jumped in to help wrangle in the girls for an easier visit. Dr. B is a delightful human being. Given the current Vet shortage in SSM, and knowing how overwhelmed our providers and their offices are - I went in to the appointment with fairly low expectations about bedside manner stuff and tons of gratitude that we finally secured veterinary care minutes away (instead of 6 hours away). The time spent with us left me feeling heard, and my girls' cared for. I admit, I can be a bit neurotic - I left feeling validated and educated. As opposed to dismissed or.. well.. neurotic. Oh - and Dr. B is an actual dog whisperer. It's funny, people complain about the prices of veterinary care in Ontario. Which confuses me. Vets, and techs spend oodles on their education, registrations, and insurances. Overhead costs (rent, wages, supplies, equipment, staff, etc..) are high and talent shortages are real. I won't work for less than I'm worth, would you? Well, they do. So thank you, Animal Hospital, for being willing to care for my pets. To answer the phone when I call. To provide reassurance and care when we need it. To help guide me through their life stages. Thank you for giving me lots of options, not just pointing me in the direction of the most expensive. Thank you for tolerating those who are unkind because you have compassion for their animal. Thank you for being willing to have your heart broken, or to bear witness to the breaking hearts of your clients when bad things happen. Thank you for giving up time with your families, so my family can feel better. Thank you for showing up, even when your own life or day is full of challenges. Thank you for caring enough about our animals, that you make countless sacrifices a day that we will never know about. And, thank you for saying no when you need to.

Worst experience of my entire life. I had a very hard decision to make ALONE inregards to my cat. We brought him in and I clearly stated what I wanted done and to be clear of the results same day. They didn't fulfill what I asked for even though I had called twice to confirm. I was shamed for my decision I was left alone and no instructions on the procedure, the vet came in did what she was asked too, but has zero remourse for me, no " I'm sorry" no sympathy. I felt I inconvenienced them for staying past close as I was crying like a baby, of loosing my cat. The receptionist opened the door and shut it, without saying I'm sorry or I felt shamed, I felt alone with zero support from anyone there. The one front desk lady glared at me as I was upset for having to pick up my dying cat and wait for results on Monday. Absolutely I did not take that as an answer if they'd understand what we have endured over the week he was a sick cat. I take my dog elsewhere and the service is 100001 percent different if only I could have had better support I'd take my grief of loosing my cat better but they've made it 1000% worse during my grief journey. So please do not take ur animals here. They are heartless people with zero sympathy for you.

In April, our one cat found a balloon and ate it. Tilley Road took us in and was exceptional! Great service from the team at the front desk. They did everything they could to help our cat pass the balloon on his own. They saved us the cost of a major surgery. From August to October we knew something was wrong with our other cat and the Animal Hospital continually accommodated us with quickly scheduling clinic visits. Dr. Porru was honest with us about our cat’s prognosis being poor but left the end of life decisions to us. We have noticed that sometimes the doctor can come off a bit stoic but we could tell that she had compassion for our family as we made the difficult decision to put our cat down. We think she was even sad for the situation. We were very grateful to the staff for not rushing us out the door, as we arrived very close to closing time, rather they didn’t bother us and we were given an extra 5-10 minutes past closing while we said goodbye to our little girl. We trust Dr. Porru’s assessment of our animals and are grateful for her service to the community.
