How to Save Money at Kanata Lakes Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've been meaning to write a review for this vet since I first came here but this last visit really sealed the deal for me. Love love love this Vet. Great service and super attentive to my cats' needs. Called with my cat having sudden worms and they got back to the issue right away. I didn't even have to bring him in. I also had him neutered here when I first got him, and they did a fantastic job. He recovered extremely well and fast with little to no complications. I was also not expecting to recieve an email checking in on him a couple days after the procedure. It was a pleasant surprise as im new to being a pet owner and I'm not sure what I am doing 100% of the time so it's nice to feel like you're not alone after these types of procedures. Best of all, it's cheap. You won't be breaking the bank going to this vet. No hidden charges, no required additional treatments that your pet doesn't need. Super transparent and honest. I look forward to taking my gremlin Mango back to them in the future.

This review is long overdue... I have been taking all of my animals to this clinic for the past 3 years. I have never had any problems and in fact have been treated very well here, it’s the best clinic in the city! April, the receptionist has always gone above and beyond for me, helping me with anything I need, which is so rare to see in a receptionist in ANY medical setting. Seeing these bad reviews are actually so shocking… The majority of the 1 star reviews are CLEARLY coming from people who are so miserable in their own lives that they feel the need to slander an amazing business and incredible employee. I think people need to find something better to do with their time. I have personally seen April deal with difficult people and she has never come across as rude or condescending. Some people are just entitled and don’t like hearing “no”. Out of all the clinics I have been to, I have never seen such great service and care as I have here! They clearly care for their furry patients and their clients! I love Kanata Lakes and will continue to come here for years to come. Best clinic ever! Highly recommend!

I had an appointment for my cat Coco at my new vet clinic (NOT Kanata Lakes) today. It made me realize how the customer service should be like. I left Kanata Lakes Animal Clinic (after my last appointment a month ago for my other kitten, Chanel), solely because I didn’t want to deal with their receptionist for appointments/information. Initially, I wasn’t sure what her problem was until I saw the Google reviews confirming her often rude and condescending nature. It’s funny how the owner’s responses are so defensive as if non-patients would complain about a receptionist 😅 Is she related to the owner or something? You’d think she’d be gone by now. However, no complaints about the doctors or the other technicians, especially Dr. Julie Lévesque is amazing. She’s professional, kind and thorough. Most people would be in a state of emergency or worry when contacting a medical clinic for assistance. You'd hope being patient and compassionate would be a given for an employee. Maybe consider introducing an online appointment booking option if you want to continue employing a bad fit for the job. At least that would reduce her interactions with the clients.

We had a very negative experience with this clinic, primarily due to a condescending and rude receptionist. After looking through other reviews, I was disappointed to find that the owner seems to have been condoning this unprofessional behavior, rather than working to improve the customer service experience. To make matters worse, the owner attempted to cover up the receptionist's actions by claiming, "we don't have a record of your visit." Fortunately, we were able to remain calm on the phone. However, the receptionist has a tendency to escalate situations, which can be highly frustrating for customers. While this experience was certainly unpleasant, it has made me realize that this clinic is a bad choice. I sincerely hope they take customer feedback seriously and work to address these ongoing issues.
