How to Save Money at Emergency Veterinary Clinic of Waterloo

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This clinic was in our vets recommended after hours emergency list. We drove out pretty late at night. We got helped right away and everyone was very kind and helpful. I’ve seen some reviews that have complained about cost and I understand some people may not be able to afford it, however, Dr.Gibson gave us numerous solutions for our animal that differed in price range to accommodate us. She also was very helpful in explaining everything happing with our boy in full detail. Our boy stayed there Thursday night- Saturday evening and was in the best hands I could’ve asked for. They called us each day and gave us detailed updates on how he was doing and what their next steps were. They also were very accommodating and told us that if we ever had any questions or concerns that we could call them. When we picked him up, the vet came out and told us all about how to give him his medication, what it does, and when it needs to be given. They also gave us new food to help him not run into this problem again. As well as pamphlets with information about his condition so we could learn on our own time. I honestly feel that this place was so professional, welcoming, understanding and supportive. After just one visit I would highly recommend that if your fur baby is sick, take them here.

I brought my dog into this clinic and was immediately seen. Everyone at the clinic was very compassionate yet straight to the point, care was provided quickly. My dog ended up needing to stay overnight to be provided life saving care. When it came down to the cost I was quoted almost 4000.00, my dog was very sick. We discussed what I could afford and that was HALF of what was quoted. The vet took her time, assured me that care would be given regardless, and re formulated a plan of care that fit into my budget. My dogs life was saved and very good care was given the entire time. I was also updated the entire time my dog was in their clinic. Special thanks to everyone involved!

My 9 month old puppy “Guy” had a burst abscess in his neck last night, it was very scary seeing as there was blood coming from his neck. He was triaged efficiently and treated with lots of care. The vet was amazing and even sent me home with a couple of cans of wet food because he had taken a liking to it. Not only this, but for a Friday night emergency vet appointment, it was very reasonably priced. Also the people at the front desk were super friendly which really helped calm the nerves. Keep on doing what you’re doing!!

***Edit- After visiting this vet clinic , I noticed my dogs paw has been extremely irritated, and she was not like this before. highly recommend any other vet clinic as this is extremely concerning. we recently had to take our small dog to the vet for her paw. we paid $700, and when we went to our local clinic, they noticed this vet place did not fully take care of her nail. we had to redo the procedure at our vet. this place also shaved the wrong paw and left the injured paw full of hair. the service was nice and friendly people, just not sure they knew exactly what they were doing.

We have had to call a handful of times to see whether we needed to bring our dogs in. The staff has always been so kind and helpful, and have always given us guidance and education to help us make an informed decision. We are so grateful for their compassion and care over the years. Thank you so very much!
