How to Save Money at Bishop Gate Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I feel scammed. Brought my pup in for a known issue that requires surgery and was told it would be 300 for X-rays and 72 for the visit. Note - I've gone through this process for the other leg so I know the drill. The x-rays were already 120 more than I paid with another vet but I let it go. They tell me they are going to get me an estimate ready and we would proceed. I thought the estimate was for the surgery when they handed me a 1200 bill - that was going to be for TODAYS VISIT! Had I known that, I would NEVER have gone in. One of the fees was 200 for the x-rays to be reviewed by the surgeon. Last year when I went through the process, reviewing X-rays is part of the visit. The fact that they charged me 82 dollars for NOTHING was infuriating. Save your time and money.

**Updated Review: July 2022. I am very impressed with the continued quality of care at this vet. Both our cats have now been spayed with them. The before, during and after care is amazing. They have great attention to details in the medication differences of my cats. Available and eager to help with any questions after surgery. Lots of support and aftercare information. This vet is caring and not money grabbers. They even do a 7 day follow up to check your pet at no charge. It is such great peace of mind to know our cats are so cared for. **Original review: I am very happy with the quality of service at this Vet. The vet is very caring and very thorough and always happy to answer questions. The staff are all very friendly and caring. The atmosphere when you walk in is very pleasant with smiling/caring faces. You can tell that they care very much about the animals. Their prices are also very good. I would highly recommend this vet to anyone.

*Kitties posted for some cute reference I love Bishop Gate Animal Hospital for so many different reasons! I apologize in advance for the lengthy review, but this has been my primary vet for all of my animals and I don’t want to leave out a single detail! I have had a total of 4 dogs and 2 cats registered with this vet. Firstly, I want to address how quick you can get an appointment. Every time I’ve called, my pets never have to wait, it’s usually either same day or within the next few. I’ve never had a huge emergency but one of my dogs (Kyla) did get sick at the time and she was in the same day within an hour or so. So you will never have to worry about your pet needing to go elsewhere or not being able to book an appointment immediately. Secondly, this vet is by far the most affordable vet I’ve ever encountered. They have very reasonable prices, compared to other vets, and you never have to worry about your pet not getting what it needs because it’s unaffordable. Additionally, They’re very knowledgeable. As a young woman who has taken on all of the family pets, I have asked them every question you can think of about my animals. I care so much and they’ve always answered all of my questions swiftly and thoroughly and left me feeling comfortable with my pets being cared for. Front desk ladies are always so nice, and will always remind you of appointments and keep you updated with all of your pets needs! Lastly, There’s a very sweet lady that provides grooming services directly in the vet! She is so awesome and will love your pet so much. She took care of all of my animals and her husband grooms my long haired cat (because I live in Kitchener so I take them to their store location for the cats) All and all, you will not be disappointed with this vet. They are truly the best vet, and care for your animals!

Very professional, amazing and gentle vets and staff and they love my puppy like their own. It has always been a great experience for years. The whole team is very knowledgeable and know what they are doing. They have cured my puppy from life and death situations, and with God’s will, he is still healthy, kicking and full of the life force.

If I could give them a 0 star I would. Our Pomeranian came there 3 times for help and they said she had a respiratory infection and leave her on antibiotics . They said she sounds healthy listening to heart The last time we went was October 13 and October 15 we rushed her to emergency vet and she passed away on the way. If you really care and love your animals don’t go there they just don’t care. I will never step foot in that place again RIP MY PARIS ❤️❤️
