How to Save Money at Westney Road Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve never been more disappointed with a veterinary clinic. I confirmed a procedure with them twice, including agreeing on the price and the date. I even rented a car and took time off work to make sure everything went smoothly. Yet, on the day of the exam, they completely canceled last minute, telling me the procedure was no longer an option. They didn’t care one bit about the time and effort I put in. This is the most unprofessional, inconsiderate clinic I’ve ever dealt with, and clearly, they couldn’t care less about their clients or their time. I will never trust them again, and I strongly recommend finding a more reliable clinic.

I love this clinic, all of the staff are very nice, friendly and compassionate. I have know Dr Samad for many years and he continues to amaze me as he is the best in Durham with the most reaonsable prices. They are very clean and gentle with all of my animals. I always recommend this clinic to anyone who asks!

My cat had an upset stomach, but they charged $700 +. The vet overcharges for unnecessary procedures. They also have a chaotic admin system. When I read clinical record I found tons of mistakes. I said my cat “pooped last night, the record said”not poop last night”. I know all the details of my cat’s former surgery, the notes said” the owner does not know”. I suggest YOU take a better look at your note. It says "did not poop". Or have you already changed it? Don't say my husband agreed this and that! He does not know the price! You never tell the clients the price before you perform unnecessary procedures! People who not working in health care are not familiar with the terminologies and animals don't talk! So you can take advantage from it, right?

On Friday I gave my 70 pound Pitbull one of those cow tail big dog bones and chilled with him for 15 minutes and watched how big of pieces he was eating and all was good so I left the room to take care of my brother’s dogs because they’re on vacation, well when I came back downstairs after 20 minutes I couldn’t believe that my dog ate the whole entire thing. On Saturday around 1 pm I came home to diarrhea all over my room, all over my bed where my poor pup sleeps, on Sunday he was even worse, and I noticed blood in his poo, and on Monday morning he was only dripping blood, 3 pretty large pools of blood. I picked him up called WESTNEY ROAD ANIMAL CLINIC and they told me to bring him in right away. Everyone there was so kind and caring, and the Doctor himself is truly amazing. They saved my best buddy’s life yesterday and I could never in one lifetime repay them. Oh and speaking about paying them, my bill was very affordable, and the level of care my little guy got yesterday was phenomenal! The doctor examined my dog and gave me multiple treatment options and didn’t try to pressure me, or scare me into an up sell. No these guys seem to care about their clients pets more than the money. Dr. Samad is an amazing Doctor, my Pup is very lucky to have such a nice and caring Doctor to make sure he is always well. I know I may sound dramatic but I truly thank you Dr. Samad and everyone that saved my dog’s life. Literally every single day I think about how sick my dog was and how you guys treated him and saved him. It actually brings tears to my eyes as I write this because my dog is all I have in this world. God Bless you guys and thank you again!
