How to Save Money at James Bay Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my cat Milo in for a snip snip. Poor little guy was not happy with me. But the staff here are absolutely amazing. With open arms, they accepted Milo made him feel comfortable, intended to his needs. Not only that, but the experience on my side was awesome. They’re very genuine here caring and passionate about their work. I have been to a few vets before this one. I highly recommend I will never go back to the other ones. Thank you James Bay veterinary clinic for all your hard work Milo misses you guys all and gives you two paws up.

Awesome clinic. Been bringing my dog here for regular checkups for years. Have had a couple emergencies with him, and they don’t hesitate to make room. The front desk staff are super lovely and always good about recommending visits to emergency clinic elsewhere if needed, even though it’s not necessarily profitable for their business, they truly care about making sure your animal is looked after ASAP. With animals it may take a couple visits to figure out what the issue is, just be patient and listen to the doctors and read what you can online. Never had any issues, sometimes just need to try a few different meds / tests which can cost a bit and be frustrating but they are very transparent about everything. All 5 doctors I’ve interacted with here over the years genuinely cared and always followed up. One oral surgery that my dog had was done very efficiently and successfully and with sensitivity to cost and pain. They’re also super responsive with sending documents (vaccines etc) to email if you need them for any reason which has been very helpful. Will keep coming back here and keep recommending to my friends. Whiskey had his 13th birthday this year and is healthy and happy and loves all the staff.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with James Bay Vet to help my kitty with his dental procedure. All of the staff are extremely friendly and patient, which put us at ease. Dr. Hunt did a fantastic job looking after my boy and Dr. Wenzel was very supportive during our post-op check up. Not only are the staff welcoming, but the clinic itself is spacious, clean and organized, which added calmness to the whole experience. I highly recommend this wonderful place for any pet and pet owner. Thank you everyone that interacted with us for this very positive experience. Gratefully, Shawn.

The vet was extremely knowledgeable and supportive when treating my dog. She was in very good hands. Also, after I mentioned that I’m on a fixed income, he went above and beyond, making every effort to keep costs as low as possible.

Last Friday we went through one of the toughest days. Having to say goodbye to our Bugzy. Our loss of him came upon us so quickly, but having James Bay Vet there for us had been exemplary. Dr. Rachel T and the staff at James bay vet went above and beyond. The love & compassion in this office is wonderful.
