How to Save Money at Midnight Sun Animal Hospital and Emergency Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Thank you for the surgery for Angel, she had a hernia and her intestines were moving out their place. Thank you doctor Todd, thank you a lot. For anybody who was desperate as me, the ER is way too expensive, and yes, you need all the money, there is no payment plans (sadly). Please be aware of these things before any surgery. And if you want to leave your pet at the ER for them to take care of it for the night is going to be 1000 per night. It is expensive

I can’t say I recommend this place too much. They have helped sometimes, and maybe other times they were doing their best, but not the right thing. One of my cats had reoccurring episodes of bloody stool. Now they said they couldn’t give an official diagnosis, but that it appeared to be irritable bowel syndrome which is treated with this antibiotic that they’d give me every time she had these episodes. Once the military moved us to Texas, we found out that she most likely does not have irritable bowel syndrome, and even if she did, the antibiotic she was being prescribed would not have been helpful. If anything, it’s only made her resistant to that antibiotic so when she has an ailment that would call for that treatment, she most likely won’t respond. My other cat was licking herself bald and the vets here at midnight sun were puzzled as to why that could be, said it must be the sensitive skin and stomach food they were being fed, and prescribed an antihistamine. Once we came to Texas, it turns out it’s a stress response, probably because we were in the process of moving, and all we needed to do was get this cat pheromone wall plug in. Now she’s doing great. Maybe these folks just aren’t as educated as the folks I saw in Texas, which might not necessarily be their fault, but it still isn’t great by any means. Aside from that, they have a staff member named Blade or Blaze, something like that, she’s been very snappy and rude with both me and my husband any time we’ve called and she’s answered. So aside from this place not providing very good or up to date medical care, they seem to have an attitude problem in the front of house staff too :/

The staff there with the exception of one, are rude including the Office Manager. They held my dogs medication and labs hostage even though I paid $500 of a thousand dollar bill. I was fighting with her insurance (which they were no help with)but agreed to pay the rest of the bill in a couple of days regardless. They kept her pain medication which I thought was cruel. They never called back when I left a message that one of the medications were causing our dog to vomit and have diarrhea. They were rude to my husband and talked down to him. When I paid the bill a couple of days later and told them to send the labs through it never happened. During her follow up appointment that was scheduled, they left us in the room for close to an hour and then wanted to argue with stating that they were an urgent care and that I should expect to wait. I told them we were leaving and not coming back. The office manager called.me and was accusatory and had the nerve to tell me that WE can’t come back. I would not go back to this clinic ever and they need to learn what customer service is. Great docs and it’s a shame that you have to deal with some of the front office staff to be seen.

Audio/Video record the entire encounter with the Vet and support staff (the clinic is audio/video recording you as well but won’t share or review it with you when it is needed or you request it). Prioritize your pet getting treatment over proving them wrong (unless of course they are hurting your pet), even if you can prove you are right and they made a mistake and are distorting what happened. The latter comes with a brutal realization their priority will not be treating the pet or correcting the mistakes made respectfully. They will group up on you, and eventually you and your pet will be asked to leave without a treatment now or in the future and you will be accused of being rude. Therefore for your pet’s sake, compliment and cater to the staff’s and Vet’s feelings even if you don’t mean it, especially if in need of pet emergency care. This clinic did provide excellent emergency care to our pets in the prior years and was our preferred pet ER in Anchorage. The purpose of this review is to help the pets get the treatment they need. If this review helps the clinic and staff, it’s a double win for the pets.

Yesterday, my mother and I were at your clinic and made the difficult decision to keep our sweet Bella from further suffering and let her go. Although we are grieving so heavily, we keep reflecting on how wonderful and compassionate each member of your staff was. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you and the existence of your clinic. It was a safe place to begin mourning. We never got the names of those that helped us, but carry their energy and the space they held for us
