How to Save Money at PET Urgent Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our senior dog was having balance issues and our vet recommended urgent care. The staff was so kind and compassionate; they provided competent care and instructions to keep things running smoothly at home. I was pleasantly surprised at the affordable cost of the visit. Yes, it can take time to be seen, and that’s how Urgent Care works, but we were still able to run errands and check back in to get an idea of how many patients were still ahead of us. So grateful for them. Added bonus…they had my dog’s info at the ready as she had been to Pet ER in 2016, and they noted that her records from the visit will be sent to her current doctor. Thanks for the help and care, Dr. K, Brittany, and Sarah!

Sadly, our family had to say goodbye to our 15 year old lab. The team at PET Urgent Care was so phenomenal during the whole process. Sarah at the front was very sweet and kind and got us in a room right away. The tech who came into the room to take our Old Man pup to have his IV place was also very respectful and sweet. Dr. K. walked me through the whole process before she started, and everyone told me to take as much time as I needed with my boy before he went off go fog heaven. Dr. K. made sure I was ready to say goodbye and took the whole process slow. I never felt rushed. The who team respected these last moments we had with our 4-legged family member. Overall, I had a very positive experience, and I would recommend this location if you needed to have a pet put down. Also their prices are some of the best in town. We called several places, and they had the best price for a private cremation and to have our boys' ashes returned to us.

Amazing care. Recently moved to Anchorage and have not established a vet in AK. My Rotty was ill, several spots on face and cheek draining. Feared the worst. Took my baby there Friday afternoon, immediately greeted and paperwork was simple. There were 2 pets ahead of us, wait time was about an hour. This is an urgent care, not an ER so they see first come, which was what I expected. Tech, Brittany, brought us into room, quickly calmed my fears and reassured me that my baby would be fine. Dr Hannah Kasukonis examined my Rotty and put my mind at ease when she asked me how to best approach my sick Rotty and took it slow and gained her trust. Sedation recommended for shaving and cleaning up sites. Estimate was much less than expected. Let a few hours later with my baby much improved. From front office to all services, could not have been more impressed. Itemized bill provided for me to submit to my insurance for claim. Highly recommend when you need same day service or cannot get into your vet. It's a relief knowing they are there when they are needed, great resource for Anchorage

I took my foster cat in to get help with a ruptured hematoma. They got me right in, were super kind, and NOT expensive. I highly recommend taking your pet here if you need urgent help. 10/10! They were great! Thank you for your kindness!
