Terrible customer service and every…
Terrible customer service and every claim is a new condition. We've had trupanion for 3 years and every claim was categorized under a new condition although 3 of them had the same reason label on the claims dashboard. A few months they changed the claim reasons on the dashboard much after the claims were actually processed. We trusted their claim review process, until this last urgent care visit. This time it was so evident that they weren't doing their due diligence and we requested an appeal 2 months ago. The condition for the previous visits was mass and the last visit to urgent care was categorized as interdigital mass, which apparently are separate things although the previous masses were interdigital as well. They just slapped another word in front of the reason in their short claim report to justify not covering it under the same condition. When I asked for more information on the claims and appeals processes and on the reason for these visits not falling under the same condition, they told me that they haven't had medical records since 2021 and that these masses have to be the exact type of cells in both visits. They told me that they needed to compare labs from the visits, reasonable. However I told them that the last visit didn't require labs, so what would they compare the first one to? They told me to send his entire medical records instead. As another customer mentioned, impossibly high standards for claims to fall under the same condition. If one of their biggest selling points is having lifetime coverage and deductibles for the same conditions, it's a scam. Today, more than 2 months after the urgent care visit and a month after requesting an appeal I found that the appeal was never open because they lacked information that they could have asked me in one of the 5 times I called or the clinic they needed it from. After 30 minutes on the phone today, I was instructed to fill out the appeals form, which is not available on the website so I had to ask to be emailed to me. Every time I call I get inconsistent and unclear instructions on what to do, but I understand the customer service specialists are trying their best and this is most likely a systemic issue. Trupanion continues to give me the run-around, but I hope that they approve this appeal since it's a $1000 that we haven't had access to in 2 months.

I need to look for new pet insurance. Submitted a $500 bill and was paid $15.00. This twice now I’ve received little to nothing back in a claim.

Good coverage. Steep premium increases.
I am very happy with the coverage and ease of filing a claim. However, my premiums have now increased 45% on a 2 year old insurance policy for a dog that is less than 3. That’s pretty steep and a poor business practice, in my opinion. People will either cancel the policy or make more trips to the vet to justify the cost of coverage. The claim reimbursement is also now taking considerably longer than when I first took out the policy. Pretty typical, more money for less service. Not sure how much longer I’ll keep the policy. At a certain point you might as well just put what you’d pay in premiums, into a savings account to cover expenses and have your own insurance policy. At least that way if you don’t need treatment for your pet, you’re not throwing your money away. I understand it’s a business that needs to make a profit, but a 45% increase in just 2 years is a bit absurd. If the upward trend in premium costs continue at this rate, I’ll most likely cancel the policy. If not, at this rate of increase, I could end up spending over $30K in premiums (not factoring in a $250 deductible and the co-pay) on a dog with a life expectancy of around 13 years. Quite the gamble.
