A great choice
After spending over $3000.00 in medical bills in the first six months after rescuing our female Airedale puppy, we decided to look into pet insurance. Libby had an expensive knack for irritating older dogs and swallowing large rocks. I talked to other dog owners, pet supply retailers and veterinarians, but no one could recommend a reliable insurance company. I read through all the information on websites, compared plans and decided Trupanion was the best fit and the best price for our needs. Two months after enrolling Libby she had an appointment for a shot. We mentioned to her veterinarian that she sometimes limped after long walks. One x-ray and two more veterinarian consultations later, we were told that Libby needed bilateral hip replacements. When I told the surgeon that we had hip dysplasia coverage on Libby, he was skeptical, saying pet insurance companies always find a way to not pay claims. Trupanion processed the claim quickly and paid 90% of the claim after the $500.00 deductible. Everyone at Trupanion was friendly and helpful and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend them to any pet owner.

Thank Trupanion
My 10mo old Amstaff was very ill & we didn't know what was wrong with her. After 6 visits to her regular vet we had to go see a specialist who told us she has meningitis. She had to have an MRI, xrays and several test done to come to this conlusion. From the begging of her sickness I would fax in a claim form and they would send out a check within a week. So when she had to see a specialist it was a very large bill and we wanted to be sure we were going to be our covered. I called trupanion they were very helpful they faxed over a pre approval form to the Vet hospital and they called me back the next day to say it was approved. I was so happy. She is on medicine now doing better. I wouldn't have been able to go this far and help my puppy without trupanion

always a reason not to cover
I discovered that Trupanion doesn't cover a vet visit unless the vet DOES something like take blood or give medicine. So, when my dog started yelping and was unable to walk in the park, the visit to the vet was not paid because the vet found nothing wrong and the dog was no longer yelping. They ignored that the vet spent a good deal of time checking my dog over from head to foot to be sure. Then they refused to pay for allergies even though no allergies have been found. The records indicated that an ear infection COULD BE a seasonal allergy so now they wont pay for any allergic conditions. In fact, they've only paid for a crisis situation when the dog suddenly started vomiting and became dehydrated and we didn't know why. This seems to be emergency only insurance although it's not supposed to be.

ehhhhhh....It's OK, but not great.
I have had this insurance for several years and used it recently for the 1st time for one of my cats. I will say that you really need to understand all of the fine print. I was reimbursed a portion but not all minus the $100 deductible. It was decided that my vet charged more than what they thought was a reasonable amount and just did not pay some of the costs. I must admit that I thought my policy paid 100% after the deductible, but when I went back and read it, it is an 80/20 split. However, I think it is wrong to not reimburse the full 80% the vet charged. I have no control over how much the hospital charges. Basically, if you add up what you pay in premiums over time, you are simply putting your pet's health expenses on a monthly payment plan and paying in advance. And more than likely you will end up paying more out of pocket all together. There are way too many limits and exclusions.

So Far So Good
My dog just got his teeth cleaned and some small warts removed and ASPCA paid 80% as advertised. Although certain charges are paid only to the maximum allowance, I am not sure if any one ever knows what the allowance is. Yet the process took about 2 weeks from the date I faxed in my claim to the time I received my reimbursement. One thing I like about them is that they will email you once the claim is processed; communication is a key.

Yes, on Pet Insurance
I was happy that I had bitten the bullet a few years back, and bought pet insurance for my Australian Shepherd, Nellie. I didn't have it when I had to come up with $4,000 for her ACL surgery. 80% of that would have been helpful. Nor did I have it on Bravo when he was diagnosed with Lymphoma. I never added up the costs of 15 months of chemo. Nellie required surgery recently, which came to $1,400. The reimbursement of 80% of the cost came very quickly and without question. I'm sold on pet insurance.
