the only downside was an increase in my premium immediately after I filled a claim which I think is wrong because I've paid for 7 years WITHOUT filing anything, so that kind of soured me.

Very positive experience with Trupanion!
I had to file our first claim with Trupanion for our 9 mo. old puppy who had a stay in the ICU over the holidays. It was extremely easy to file the claim online and Trupanion took care of contacting the hospital for all of the records regarding our pups stay. They were prompt in paying the claim :))
