Helpful yet Disappointed
All of the representatives who assisted us the evening we had our scary event with our puppy and with our claim afterwards were EXTREMELY helpful and through. However, we did not know that the “deductible” was per incident. When we had originally signed up for Trupanion we were under the impression the deductible was yearly, like most insurance. So when we spoke to the representative after submitting our claim and explained that it was per incident we were very disappointed. We are now shopping around for other pet insurances.

Horrible pet insurance (if you want to…
Horrible pet insurance (if you want to call it that) I got my puppy in August of 2008, and insured him right away. Never ONCE missed a payment nor had a lapse in coverage. I had it all or so I thought. Accident, wellness and sickness with a 100.00 dollars deductible. Never filed a claim for yrs but when he got a bad mouth infection and needed teeth pulled they didn't pay a cent for his surgery, Over 2000.00 dollars and not ONE cent did they pay as it was pre-existing because I knew the previous year he needed work done. He ended up with Congestive heart failure in later years and they paid NOT ONE CENT as it was a preexisting condition too as he had a heart murmur! I put him down this past Wednesday as he developed kidney failure and I didn't want him to suffer. It about killed my wife and I to put down our boy. They informed me two weeks before that they would NEVER pay anything that had to do with his CHF or any problems arising through such. I cannot tell you how sickend I am with this company and the people that work there. NO heart whatsoever! They don't give one iota about your pet, only money which I payed to them dearly over the course of 12 years. I paid them well over 15 thousand in that time period and they reimbursed me probably 1000.00! That is it!!! I was paying $271.00 each month in the end. Tell me, why are these people even in this business? Money, that's it! Don't make the same mistake as my wife and I did. Find another insurance for your beloved family members!

Used to be great. Now... stay away!
For the first few years, HealthPaws was amazing. They had reasonable rates and paid every claim we submitted. In the last year, that all changed. It started with a 36% rate hike that came overnight. When I questioned that I was told that it was a one time thing because they had had so many large claims and were also calculating premiums differently now (taking dog's age into account). I was also told that I shouldn't expect another similar rate hike. Then I submitted a claim that they wrongfully denied. It took me talking to 3 different people over multiple weeks to get that resolved, and then they didn't pay for another month. The final straw was when they hiked my rates another 31% AFTER TELLING ME THAT WOULD NOT HAPPEN! When I contacted them about it they gave me the exact same party line that they gave last year and refused to answer many of the questions I asked nor to give any assurance they wouldn't just keep hiking my rates year after year. If you're looking for a reliable insurer, I strongly urge you to look at some of their competitors. Otherwise you may find youself paying hundreds more per year than you thought you were signing up for.

Never approved anything. Nice phone staff.
We went with Trupanion because our Vet had just become associated with VCA animal hospitals, and that's the insurance they push. Our cat was getting old, so we thought some sort of insurance was probably a good idea. Trupanion seems to offer a simple deductible/monthly premium trade-off. She had some diagnosed conditions going in, mainly hypothyroid. After we got her covered, she was diagnosed with another intestinal condition, which they refused to cover as "pre-existing". The symptoms are similar to intestinal cancer, but the cancer specialist recommended against an invasive test procedure because there is only one treatment regime for cats, cancer or not. In retrospect, it could have been beneficial if the specialist had done something to confirm a new cancer. But Trupanion never approved any of the steroids recommended for her, nor any of the veterinary cat food. When she went into the last emergency vet -- who told us she most likely was going through liver failure -- they didn't cover that either. They may cover the euthanasia, but I doubt it. And if they cover any of it, our deductible eats it all. So medically-speaking, useless. Financially speaking, the premium represented about 1/3 of her medical/insurance expenses. Everyone I ever talked to has been very sweet and sympathetic. But overall, the policy was worthless.
