They will not cover hereditary hip Dysplasia

We rescued a 2 year old English Mastiff that was next to be euthanized at a dog shelter because no one else would take him. When we picked him up at the shelter we were told he has a slight limp but had been checked out by the vet who covers the pounds animals and we were told it was nothing serious and he would out grow it and given a clean bill of health. We got TruPanion insurance for him. Our first visit to our vet 1 month later with Zeus gave him a clean bill of health. 6 months later we noticed a slight limp. Brought him to our vet who did x-rays and found he had hereditary hip dysplasia (extremely common in English Mastiffs) Trupanion states in their adds that they cover hip dysplasia in large breed dogs. Hip dysplasia can only happen through heredity, not injury. When our vet submitted the claims to Truepanion, they refused to cover Zeus because it was a pre existing injury. I wasn't an injury it was hereditary. Even though they say they cover hereditary hip dysplasia in common large breed dogs, they refused to cover us and zeus. They stated they did an extensive search of Zeus before we had him and before the pound had him and found someone else had taken x-rays that showed hereditary hip dysplasia. So apparently their claim of covering hereditary hip dysplasia in large breed dogs was a lie and cost us 6 months of payments to them.

I’m so glad we got pet Trupanion insurance on Bella!

We got pet insurance on Bella when she was a puppy and so glad we did. Little did we know she would have a skin condition that would need monthly medication and now a anal mass and needs surgery and possible radiation/chemo. She’s only 5 years old. Trupanion has been great! A fast turnaround with claims and everyone I talk to is so nice and helpful.

Very Disappointing

My dachshund had IVDD a while ago and needed to get back surgery asap as he suddenly lost motor function in his legs. This incident happened to occur at a very unusual time regarding my insurance policy. When I called Embrace they informed me that my 6 -month waiting period did not end until midnight of that day. So basically, if I put off my dog's surgery until 1 minute past midnight, I could have gotten the surgery covered (at least that's what they claim). They told me there was nothing they could do, no options or suggestions were offered to me, they offered to cover NOTHING. I understand the 6-month waiting period policy not covering the surgery itself but I was surprised that I was told I couldn't get coverage for a single thing outside of that surgery either (medications, blood work, hospital stay fees, nothing). I paid in for 6 months and couldn't utilize anything from the insurance because of a couple hours between my dog's surgery and the end of my 6-month waiting period. I would have thought that basic services would have been covered at least such as the initial vet visit at my local clinic and the services they provided. Needless to say, I have a different insurance company now.

I recently neutered my dog and hoped insurance would pay for some or all of it, but it was not covered. I also take my dog to the vet regularly for check ups and shots and purchase medicine for heartworms and fleas/ticks. I was also hoping insurance covered some or all of this, but it didn't. I'll keep it in case something really bad happens to my dog, but wished more was covered.

I have been a customer for a little over a year. My dog had a pretty serious injury requiring multiple vet specialists, ultrasounds, and rehab. Embrace has covered all of it. Been easy to work with and submit claims as long as you have the required documentation. Would recommend.

Great 4 Years

At the advice of a friend, we joined Healthy Paws ever since we brought our dog home. Healthy Paws has been great - easy to file claims, get reimbursements, and good communications. Our dog had 3 surgeries, dealing with few health issues, and Healthy Paws has been a good partner through all. The premiums do go up every year, but so far, has been worth it for us over the past 4 years.
