Emergency

Recently Alvin chewed and swallowed a plastic bottle cap. Rush him to emergency vet hospital in Rhode Island at 10 pm. It was successfully retrieved. Filed claim online. Received check about 2 weeks later.

Employer-sponsored plan is well worth it

We have an employer-sponsored plan which Nationwide calls "My Pet Protection". This review only speaks to that plan and not Modular, Major Medical, or Whole Pet. Let's get the negative out of the way. In the 4+ years we have had the plan, the premiums have more than increased significantly from the high-$30s/mo to about $120/mo, which is still surprisingly well-priced for the benefits ($7500 yearly max coverage and 90% reimbursement). Claims are handled quickly once submitted via their portal and Nationwide has been good about quite a few claims we have submitted months later. As our pup got up in age, she developed cancerous tumors that were removed, but then required recurring oncology visits and chemotherapy. Nationwide covered and reimbursed at 90% including the chemo. I definitely recommend Nationwide if your employer partners and sponsors their vet insurance. I'm not sure at this time if the "My Pet Protection" plan still reimburses at 90%, but it has been journey to go through cancer/chemo with our pup, but a relief to have this particular pet insurance plan through Nationwide.

Online cancellation is a lie.

We received a pet insurance premium increase letter in May 2024 that doubled the premium for our two bunnies. Naturally, that's a deal breaker for anyone and we went to cancel online, since that's a feature they offer. We canceled about a week or two before the renewal date. However, apparently you CAN'T CANCEL ONLINE, despite them having that function, as we still got charged. You have to CALL to cancel, apparently, and now we have to pay a pro-rated amount for insurance we never intended to use, because we got no confirmation or notice of our cancellation request being denied or not even going through. We only found out after the fact and when we reviewed our finances to find they snuck in that charge. You can't even delete your payment information online to prevent that from happening. Utterly abusive consumer experience and I'll NEVER use Nationwide again.

BEWARE OF NATIONWIDE - THE WORST!!!

I have had problems with Nationwide ever since I first signed up five years ago. My Pom had to have a surgery first year on her vulva and they would not pay a dime. I should have changed then. Now four years later I submitted a claim, then paid deductible which was most of the claim. The vet wanted me to come back in a month for a checkup and I submitted claim and they charged me with deductible all over again! WHAT????? WHAT A SCAM!!!!!!

SAY NO TO NATIONWIDE

As many reviewers mentioned, Nationwide discontinued the Whole Pet plan that I’ve had for 7 years, since my dog was a puppy. I’ve paid thousands of dollars only for my insurance to be cancelled with no option to join a different plan without all prior treatment being considered pre-existing. Once you sign up for pet insurance, you’re at the mercy of the company because if you leave for another company, everything previously treated is pre-existing and not covered. I paid the $300+ monthly premium assuming I was investing in my pets long term care. Now I (and 100,000+ other pet owners) are scrambling to figure out how we can continue to afford our pets medical care. Stay away from Nationwide!!! They could cancel other plans in the future and prioritize corporate greed, not pet care.

Monthly Cost

Policies start at approximately $12 per month.

Coverage

Nationwide offers a variety of plans offering varying levels of coverage. The company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness, offers 90% reimbursement for accident, injury, illness and wellness care, inclusive of exam fees. All Nationwide members have complimentary 24/7 access to vethelpline.

Payout Limits

Depending on the plan selected, there may be annual benefit limits or per incident benefit allowances. There is no annual limit for the company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness.

Deductible

Annual deductibles range from $0 to $1,000. Most popular annual deductible for Whole Pet with Wellness is $250.

Age Limits

No age restriction to enroll in company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness. Other plans may have age restrictions.

Waiting Period

14-day waiting period after application approved and payment of premium is received.

Exclusions

Pre-existing conditions are not covered on any plans (if a condition is curable, it may be eligible for review if pet remains treatment-free for at least six months). Whole Pet with Wellness covers nearly all veterinary expenses. Notable exclusions include boarding and grooming.
