Left hanging in the wind now that I have an elderly dog.
I've been a client for the last 6 years and very happy with my pet insurance until recently. My last claim on December 20th took about 2 months to be paid out on. I know it was partly my fault - I was notified that my claim was illegible, so when I resubmitted, it gets kicked back to the "wait 30 days until you even look at it" pile. Then it got kicked back again because I didn't put a diagnosis on it. So I'm back to waiting 30 more days until you even look at it!
Then come to find out, because heart murmurs are common in the breed of my dog, you'll only pay out $275 per year on this condition. I've been paying monthly premiums for 6 years knowing that one day my pet will become elderly and need a little more help medically than a young pup. My claims previously have been pretty routine. Now that he needs a little more help - daily medication for his heart murmur, I definitely feel like I'm left hanging in the wind by my pet insurance.
I know I probably can't switch pet insurance very cost effectively now that I have a 9 1/2 year old dog, but with my next dog, I will probably look into other companies.

Policies start at approximately $12 per month.
Coverage
Nationwide offers a variety of plans offering varying levels of coverage.
The company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness, offers 90% reimbursement for accident, injury, illness and wellness care, inclusive of exam fees.
All Nationwide members have complimentary 24/7 access to vethelpline.
Payout Limits
Depending on the plan selected, there may be annual benefit limits or per incident benefit allowances.
There is no annual limit for the company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness.
Deductible
Annual deductibles range from $0 to $1,000.
Most popular annual deductible for Whole Pet with Wellness is $250.
Age Limits
No age restriction to enroll in company’s most popular plan, Whole Pet with Wellness.
Other plans may have age restrictions.
Waiting Period
14-day waiting period after application approved and payment of premium is received.
Exclusions
Pre-existing conditions are not covered on any plans (if a condition is curable, it may be eligible for review if pet remains treatment-free for at least six months).
Whole Pet with Wellness covers nearly all veterinary expenses. Notable exclusions include boarding and grooming.
