Buyer beware with Healthy Paws, skyrocket rates in no time

I’ve been a loyal Healthy Paws customer since we brought our puppy home 10 years ago. In all that time, I never missed a payment and only submitted a single claim—for under $500. I expected premiums to increase gradually with age, and over the years they rose to $105/month. Reasonable enough—until this month. Imagine my shock when I received a new monthly bill for $325—a nearly 200% increase overnight. Thinking it was a mistake, I tried to reach their customer service. It took two days and four hours of navigating their phone tree before I could finally speak to a real person. I was told the price hike was due to changes in underwriters and my dog’s age. No notice. No warning. Just a staggering increase. When I expressed my concern, their solution was laughable: I could reduce the monthly cost if I agreed to a $1,000 deductible and only 50% reimbursement on future claims. In other words, I’d be paying hundreds each month for a policy that would be nearly useless in a real emergency. Pet insurance is important. But if you're shopping for coverage, do your research and seriously consider other providers before choosing Healthy Paws. What started as a trustworthy company has become, in my experience, anything but.

I dot recommend Healthy Paws. There is a reason their rating has dropped.

My dog has been insured by Healthy Paws for six years. I’ve never made a claim until now. Due to an injury from biting on something hard, he needed a root canal. I’ve been given the runaround for nearly two weeks. The adjuster considers it a “condition” vs an “injury.” He is asking for six years of medical records to establish it is not a preexisting “condition.” Healthy Paws does not allow consumers to speak with adjusters, only customer service people who read from a script. The only phone number for the entire company is that of customer service. The hold music is a loop of approximately 20 seconds from a Lynyrd Skinner song, and I’ve been on hold for over 40 minutes. Please check current ratings of insurance companies. They may have been rated #1 in 2017, but this is 2025. I regret choosing Healthy Paws, and I regret referring them to my friends.

PREDATORY rate hikes

PREDATORY rate hikes. I’ve had insurance with them for the last 6 years, and my rate shot up from $78 to $178 this year. Their reasoning was made with baseless claims that aren’t supported by hard data, saying the rate in my area went up because pet parents were filing more claims. Even if that were the case, never has my rate risen over 100%. Run away to Figo, ASPCA, or Trupanion. This company should be fined for what they do to the people they insure. Now my dog is 10, and I cannot switch my insurance up because of a pre-existing condition. I don’t know how these people sleep at night.

Grateful to have Healthy Paws Pet Insurance

I signed up with Healthy Paws when I got my puppy in 2021. My monthly rate has increased by about $20 in the four years I’ve had it and my pup is very steady and is not accident prone, so I considered canceling earlier this year. Thank goodness I didn’t! She had a serious digestive issue which would have cost us $1600 in vet bills, Healthy Paws helped significantly with that and enabled me to feel comfortable pursuing further testing than I could have afforded on my own. About a month later my pup stepped on a bee and threw up. I decided to take her to the ER vet to be safe because I knew that I had insurance to help cover that, and thank goodness I didn’t! Anaphylaxis presents as GI issues in dogs and she was having a reaction from the sting that required immediate treatment. I was able to submit my claim from the vets office, and received updates and a clear breakdown of reimbursement within 24hrs. It’s been a little over a week and the Healthy Paws team reached out to follow up on how she is doing which I appreciated. Very grateful for their help in minimizing the stress that can come about from emergency vet care and the costs associated with it, it’s allowed me to be a better advocate and guardian for my dog.
