How to Save Money at Laurelwood Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
We have been taking our pets to Laurelwood Veterinary Clinic since 2004 and our sweet dog, Lily, was one of their first animals they took care of. She had Addison’s Disease which they were able to diagnose shortly after taking her on as a patient; we always felt like we were in the best hands with her. We now have three cats, two of them being Siamese. One is a bit naughty, and Dr. Carey and Dr. Rideout have helped us figure how to deal with Joey’s extra ‘energy.’ Now, a week and a half ago, our second Siamese, Nemo, the sweetest cat you will ever meet, became gravely ill. Dr. Rideout has worked so diligently to figure out what is going on. Nemo is an enigma; she even had other vets look at him all the while she was thinking about the costs for me. Dr. Rideout has been a rockstar throughout Nemo’s entire illness. I know that our animals are always in the best hands at Laurelwood no matter who is working with our fur babies: Dr. Carey, Dr. Rideout, Dr. Knight, Dr. Whilhelm, or Dr. Pender. In addition, the office staff are incredible. They are very professional answering the phone and always are so delightful to deal with. They are the engine that makes the rest of the office work. I know I will be greeted by the most polite people who will be helpful. Everyone is caring, professional, and treats my animals as thought they are their own. I implicitly trust all of them with my animals, and that says a lot.

Fantastic vet in north Waterloo. They are really kind and knowledgeable with our dog. Highly recommended if you just got a new dog or cat. They also host puppy training classes here for an additional fee but it's a great way to get your furry friend used to some commands

The entire team at Laurelwwood Veterinary are exceptional. They are compassionate, dedicated, kind and gentle. There is nowhere else I would take my furbaby. From the first day we took in our 8 week old puppy to the day 10 years later they helped him go over the Rainbow Bridge, they went over and beyond to take care of our boy. We will forever be grateful to them

Our Little Miss Kitty could not have gotten care from a more trusting and compassionate team of professionals, than at Laurelwood Veterinary. They are always friendly, very knowledgeable, and have an amazing caring support system. They treat every furry friend that comes through the door like the family member they are. So highly recommended. Special thanks to Dr Kathleen Knight who at an extremely difficult time made it possible for us to deal with having to put Kitty down. We will never forget how her gentle hands soothed our scared little Kitty, she's truly a compassionate doctor and wonderful person.

It’s hard having a pet, I feel like I am never doing enough - and so many vets try to scam people out of money and don’t care enough. Laurelwood is probably one of the best spots in my city. They show compassion, they’re transparent, and charge normal amounts. The building is huge and clean. The doctors and staff are so caring, and answer emails and calls fast. They just make me feel at ease!
