How to Save Money at Brealey Drive Animal Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my puppy sunny here and was very happy with the service right when you walk through the door. It’s clean and the vets are very knowledgeable and personable. They would sit on the floor with sunny and play with him and make him comfortable before we started his shots. They always ask if we have any concerns about sunny and you know they really care for the animals they’re seeing. Sunny loves going to the vet thank you all!

I brought my rabbits here. Both were neutered. All went well and they were very informative. They do live in the house and since they were neutered, they don't spray and don't fight anymore.

Dr Tracy is an incredible vet. I wish everyone got to have her care for their pets. Update: March 2024 When one of our cats went into respiratory distress at the end of the day, the staff at BDAC got us in at the last minute. Dr Tracy and her staff showed us nothing but concern and compassion and when we had to make the impossible decision to let our baby go, the entire staff stayed late so that we could spend time with him before and after he was gone. What felt like moments to us was actually hours and when we finally stepped away from his body, we realized it was now dark out. Not once did we feel any pressure to hurry or say our goodbyes faster. This kindness is something my husband and i will be forever grateful for. Thank you so much for doing everything you could for Ollie and us.

It's been hit or miss for me at this vet clinic. Feel very uncomfortable having different opinions or suggestions to what is strictly recommended, not so much from the doctor but from receptionists and techs. Tone is condescending and impatient, and any notion of discussion or even asking questions for alternatives is seen as being argumentative. Personally do not feel this is an open minded clinic with consistent good service, honouring patient centred care and respecting pet owners views. I'm in healthcare myself and have owned a dog for 12 years and 2 cats for 2 years, but made to feel very unknowledgeable and even not putting my pets first on multiple occasions.

I literally cannot say enough good things about this clinic. We are relatively new clients. We have 3 dogs and had a litter of 11. Prices are very reasonable. We had a negative experience with our past clinic and decided to try here. All the staff are compassionate, friendly and walk you through all options available. I never feel pushed, rushed or that annoying upselling. I honestly thought I was walking in today to say goodbye to my best friend. Dr. Tracy took all the time to explain possible options. After weighing all options I decided to try some meds to help some symptoms. Thank you so much for your compassion today as I was a walking mess. Thankful to have more time with my Buster. They also take the time to the following day to call and check in, which is very thoughtful. Our furbabies are like family and Brealey treats them like their own. Keep up the great work, everyone.
