How to Save Money at Kawartha Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

What a positive experience at this animal hospital! First off, all the staff were wonderful and so helpful. A big shout out to Jesse who was incredibly empathetic, informative and helpful at a time when I was very tired and emotional. Thank you from the bottom of my heart Jesse. Dr Bond was excellent and calming, putting a methodical medical plan in place for our beloved cat Xena. Thank you Dr Bond, means so much to us. I would highly recommend this vet hospital to any pet owner! You won't be disappointed!

We have been going to this vet since February. Everyone has been amazing and loving and caring towards my pup. Because of this, going to the vet is definitely not a scary experience for her. In fact she gets excited when we drive into the parking lot! Recently she had surgery and I was extremely touched that the office sent a card signed by the team. This is a very special place run by animal lovers. Dr Cheryl is phenomenal and the vet techs, assistants, and client reps are absolutely wonderful to work with. I feel like they listen to my concerns, are very accommodating, have great communication, and I am confident my fur baby is getting the best care.

This vets hours are NOT good if you work a 9-5 Mon to Friday. This vets hours are NOT good because they close for extended times around holidays. We rarely see the same vet. We were given moldy medicine once. They make you feel like part of 'the family' by writing your dogs name on a board. Is that what you want? This is private health care. I expect that they would be friendly, listen to your concerns and immediately follow up if your dog attends the Peterborough emergency clinic while they are on vacation. That is not the case. If I'm going to pay money every year for an annual check up which they insist on doing if you want to get flea / tick meds from them, Then I would expect to get support I need from them when my animal is ill. But they prioritize their own time off and money over their clients health.

I’ve used this vet in the past for my cat. Friendly enough doctors, however whoever the secretary was today needs a lesson in manners, communication, and how to sufficiently do her job properly. My partner and I had called to inquire about some health concerns regarding our dog and cat, she was very impatient, wasn’t listing to what we were saying, started filling out an application form without properly understanding the general questions we were attempting to get an answer to. She made a low-key snarky comment that made me sense a general sense of homophobia when my partner had called me her girlfriend. Made us very uncomfortable and then proceeded to try to make us feel bad for her decision to start filling out a new patient application and getting half way through. Needless to say, we got off the phone and called another vet who knew how to answer questions. We will not be returning to this place and we will not be recommending it to others.
