How to Save Money at VCA Canada Beardall Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought our dog here for surgery to remove mass/lump on her ear. Location of lump made it difficult, but they did a fantastic job. Minor setback during the healing process (Huskies will be Huskies).....but all healed and a happy dawg. Thanks Dr White and all the staff - they were attentive & thorough.

**I would like to put a very important update to this review. We met with dr. White post Lucy’s passing (less than a week later) for an appointment we had already scheduled for our other dog, Bella. We had already received a very guilt inflicted email from dr. White, the morning after I posted my first review. We had just lost Lucy the evening before and we could not believe how insensitive the email was, especially the timing. Then, at the end of Bella’s appointment, she out of the blue brought up the review again, and asked me not to post Google reviews. I had the manager, Sam join us for the conversation, after dr. White then threatened to discontinue care of Bella, because she “could not trust I wouldn’t do it again.” I had actually already told dr. White that I would not, although I am not sorry for leaving an honest review (original review below). Sam looked extremely uncomfortable backing Dr. White, which I actually felt sympathy for her and what she must have to deal with on a regular basis. I was entirely wrong about dr. White in my first review. Lesson learned; she is very good at appearing competent, and once her image is tainted in the slightest, her true colours show. I would also like to point out in this review the positive interaction we had with Rae (front desk) that day, and she seemed to be the only staff member we encountered that truly felt badly for the loss of Lucy and the way we were treated. We have contacted the main VCA office to report this, and will be contacting CVO as well, as we figure out how to properly word and address the unprofessionalism and coercion we shockingly experience with Cherie White. Needless to say, we switched vets. We are continuing excellent care received at Princess Animal Hospital. Original unedited review: We stay at this vet office because of Dr. White’s competency and kindness. We had two dogs - one of them was euthanized today. Our Lucy, was a rescue and only 13 months old. She had a complex medical history and required many vet trips and calls. Anytime we called, it was easy to tell the girls at the front were annoyed that we were bugging them about Lucy again. I will say, Erin, has always been kind and pleasant. Lucy rapidly deteriorated, likely due to an issue with her central nervous system. Even on a day we had to say goodbye to her, the lack of compassion was more than evident. Thank you to Princess Animal Hospital for helping Lucy today, and thankfully our Bella isn’t as much of an inconvenience for Beardall.

Loved it! I just went there for the first time, and my impressions were all good. The doctor is knowledgeable and absolutely adores animals. My cat was so relaxed with her, I think there were purrs! The staff was friendly and prompt, and the prices were reasonable. This is where I will be taking my pets for everything from now on.

I was being forced by my old vet to put my dog down. I came to Beardall for a second opinion and they were AMAZING I have only positive things to say. I can’t thank them enough for providing my dog the proper care she needed!! They saved her and me. They were so kind and so helpful. I’m so grateful for Dr. Loomis I now bring all 3 of my dogs there and the MY VCA app is incredible. Prescriptions, test results, receipts and so much other information to keep you updated and informed. Thank you Beardall I will forever be thankful to the whole team.
