How to Save Money at Kingston Regional Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We have visited Kingston Regional Pet Hospital quite a few times over the last few years. Each experience would be rated 10/10. One of our first experiences was almost two years ago, and it was one of the worst times of my life. We had to make the decision to euthanize our 4 year old cat, Jude. If it wasn’t for Michelle and the rest of the team comforting me and reassuring me that I’ve done all I can do and it was the right thing to do, I don’t know if I could’ve made it through that night. Thinking back on that horrible night and awful loss, I will never forget Michelle’s comforting words. Flash forward to April 27th (3 days ago), my wife and I had to go because our dogs got into a fight, and unfortunately one of them needed stitches in her ear. We called first and they told us to give them a call when we arrived. We did just that and were met with kindness, empathy and compassion over the phone. When they told us to bring her in, I was met with that same kind face from two years ago, Michelle and instantly I was at peace. I knew we were at the right place! Our dog was treated and sent home that night and all is well with both dogs. Thank you KRPH and Michelle for all you do for all of us pet parents out there. We know your jobs are extremely tough, but just know we appreciate you so, so much!

Staff were very kind and understanding when we took my mom's dog to be seen after he collapsed. He ultimately had to be put to sleep and we could not have asked for better staff to help. They treated my mom's dog as if he were their own pet, even after he passed they had someone stay in the room so he didn't have to be alone when we left. My only other thoughts are that I wish this animal hospital could be staffed 24/7 so that people don't have to travel so far during their closing hours. Thank you to all the staff who were so kind to my mom and Zepplin. Thank you for making his transition over the rainbow bridge so calm.

I had to make the devastating decision to bring the love of my life in (6 year old Old English Bulldog named Gunner who was epileptic) knowing he would not be coming home after having 14 seizures in 48 hours. The staff on Sunday were amazing and the tech, Onie even sat and listened to our stories about him until we were ready to leave him. She even said she would sit with him so he wouldn't be alone. That made the hardest decision I've ever had to make a little easier knowing that she cared enough to make that offer. We really appreciate all your kindness and caring ❤️ Julie & Ric Belaire Edit- I just wanted to add an update and thank the cli ic for the card and to Onie for the thoughtful personalized message in the card that was sent. It meant a lot to us. And to thank you so much for the paw print. This clinic is absolutely wonderful.

Great experience from the initial phone call, triage was done in our car (much less stressful for our cat) and we were able to wait quietly until the Vet and team were ready to examine. The time between vitals, examination, possible diagnosis, testing and discharge was pretty fast. All of the staff were extremely knowledgeable and pleasant. The hospital itself is very clean and sterile, and the price was more than reasonable, 200.00 for the visit plus testing costs, which in my opinion is very fair for a Sunday morning. The best part for us was the follow-up phone call the following evening, to see how the cat was feeling. We all appreciated it. I'm happy to report Slinky is on the road to recovery ♥️

I came in scared and on the verge of tears and left with a smile and Cash , our 11 yr old kitty purring. We were greeted by the sweetest Veterinary Technician at the door and immediately shown to a room where Cash was examined by the Vet Tec. She was very gentle and professional. The Vet came in next and really took her time explaining things to me ... something that means a lot when you're worried and nervous. She is an excellent doctor with a very gentle touch. Please don't wait to go to a Veterinarian or Urgent Care clinic. We're lucky, Cash will be okay, but seriously, some things just can't be fixed at home. We were also pleasantly surprised with the bill.....considering the amount of time and care and expertise that went into that SUNDAY visit. AND we left with medication! Five Star service. Thank you so much. PS.I feel so bad I don't remember their names because of the circumstances but the date was Sept. 20, 1 p.m.
