How to Save Money at Muskoka Lakes Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I can't express how highly I would recommend Dr. Martin and the team here! I brought my cat Tulip in while I was in Muskoka for the summer and each person I encountered was incredibly kind and compassionate. Although it turned out to be end of life care, I felt supported and informed throughout the whole process. Every step of the way has been thoroughly considered in their clinic to bring peace of mind. The kindness I received after Tulip's passing was genuine and heartwarming, and I would trust the team here wholeheartedly with any and all future fur babies. Truly the best veterinary clinic I've been to!

Dr. Martin and the staff were so compassionate and empathetic, during our sweet Remmy's passing on December 30th. The moment you walk in the door, you just feel so valued. They made sure my family and my dog were comfortable, they took the time to explain in detail what the situation was, gave us options, and answered anyone's questions. Our family was distraught, as Remmy was very close to us, not once did I ever feel judged or rushed to say goodbye. They gave us detail on what was going to happen, and allowed us time to express what we were feeling. This place deserves much more than just five stars. I highly recommend them.

Dr. Martin and the staff were so compassionate during our sweet Mia’s illness and after her eventual passing. I have never experienced such kindness from a clinic as I have from Muskoka Lakes Vet. The moment you walk in their door, you feel valued as a client. I cannot recommend them enough and I tell everyone I know to bring their pets here.

Not being from the area and here for a visit, I looked into which clinic to bring my dog to after she ate a corn cob. I'm so happy I called Muskoka Lakes Animal Hospital, and they were able to fit us in as an emergency case. The team was welcoming and friendly, and the clinic was nice and clean. A big thank you to Dr. Bowley and the technician, Krista. They made me feel comfortable, and I felt good about my dog being in their care, as well as having the option of not sedating Harley for X-rays if not necessary, this helped me out with cost. The front staff was also so friendly and amazing. I can tell they truly care for and love animals here. From the bottom of my heart, I thank the team so much for seeing my girl on such short notice. I would recommend this locally owned clinic to anyone. As much as I don't wish for any more accidents while coming to visit Muskoka, I'm at ease knowing Muskoka Lakes Animal Hospital is nearby. Harley is doing great, and we did not have to resort to surgery. ❤️❤️

I don't know where to start...the entire team at Muskoka Lakes vet has been incredible. You were all so supportive, caring and dedicated in trying to help with Chelsea. Although Chels has passed, I know she got the best care possible, and you all showed so much compassion. You all deserve more then a 5 star 🤍
