How to Save Money at Downey Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Best vet I've ever had. Prices are surprisingly fair, the whole staff is great with animals, won't push anything on you (unless actual concern for the animal), a genuinely amazing vet. I've been with him for around a decade, and he's been nothing less than amazing every time I've had to see him. He genuinely cares about your animal's well-being, and reassures both you, and your pet. I reccomend him, and his staff all the time.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ I can't recommend Downey Animal Hospital enough! This is by far the best place in Guelph to bring your pets. Every time I've visited, I've been blown away by the level of care and compassion shown to both the animals and their owners. Dr. Ray is absolutely amazing—he really knows his stuff and takes the time to make sure your pet gets the best treatment possible. You can tell he genuinely cares about each and every animal that walks through the door. What really stands out about Dr. Ray is not just his expertise, but his personality. He's funny, energetic, and makes every visit a positive experience. My pets absolutely love him, and you can see how much he loves what he does. He goes above and beyond to make sure that both the pets and their owners are comfortable and informed throughout the entire process. Whether it's a routine check-up or something more serious, Dr. Ray and the staff here always make me feel like my pets are in the best hands. The team at Downey Animal Hospital is professional, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable. They explain everything in detail and ensure you fully understand what's going on with your pet’s health. If you're in Guelph and need a reliable, trustworthy, and fun place to take your animals, this is the spot! Thank you, Dr. Ray, for everything you do! My pets, daughter and I are so grateful! Stefan

We recently took our dog Flakka here for his dental work. In the beginning I was nervous taking him to a new vet but our previous vet had quoted double the amount for the dental work and we couldn't afford it at that price so we shopped around. We came across this clinic who is local to us and lucked out. I would highly recommend taking your dog to this vet, they are honest, care about the animals and realize its not all about gouging customers for short term profits. We will be bringing our other two dogs here as well as recommending them to family and friends. Thanks for taking care of our little guy and actually caring about the animals. Happy to have a new vet that is honest and local to us here in Guelph!!!!

My emergency visit to Downey Animal Hospital today certainly warrants a review. I was incredibly impressed with Dr Rai and the rest of the staff. Jaxson was seen as soon as I stepped foot in the building and was made to feel very comfortable in what was a stressful situation for him. Staff are warm, personable and efficient , I cannot say enough good things. Thanks for treating my dog as if he were your own. Kirsten

I went to get my Bearded dragon checked out. The staff and vet were so kind and informed. I highly recommend Downey animal hospital for any animal. The vet had a genuine love for animals and took extra time to answer any questions we had about our Beardie. I felt very cared for and reassured about any concerns I might have had.
