How to Save Money at The Kingsway Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Throughout JJ's life, we've been to 4 different veterinary clinics because we moved houses a lot. By far, The Kingsway Animal Hospital is the best. We come from afar (1 hour drive) just to see Dr. Rosemary Draganic. She's amazing and the staff are also amazing. You can tell they genuinely care about your pet. Thank you! 😀

Dr Bayer is a heart-centred pro. Admin got us in within 45 minutes. Had us there for 1 hour and 15 minutes. They helped us nurse our little kitten back to life and gave us special gastrointestinal kitten food she desperately needed. Dr Bayer and loving team deserve their 4.9/5 rating. Their rates are affordable. And no pressure to buy anything else. Definitely recommend.

I returned to The Kingsway Animal Hospital with my cat Strawberry after a six-year absence. Dr. Mayer was wonderful, so calm, patient, and helpful with her suggestions. All of the staff were super friendly and you could tell they have a passion for caring for animals. I would recommend them.

The people working at the KAH are amazing and real professionals. When we took our cat Mia to the KAH for her first examination, she was four months old and she was very restless on the way. But as soon as we crossed the threshold of the hospital, she immediately calmed down and was very pleased during the examination conducted by Dr.Devon Edwards. As is known, cats sense people very well. A few months later we needed to have surgery for our cat... Spaying your cat is a major surgical procedure involving many people who work together as a team. And the KAH team showed themselves at a high level. Immediately after the surgery, Mia was already playing and had good appetite !!!Many thanks to : Alyshia, Marie-Rose,Alex,Krysten! And special thanks to our Dr. Devon Edwards who performed the operation at the highest level !!!

I wish I could provide a positive review as the actual vets have been quite good, however, the woman at the front desk is so difficult and unhelpful that my rating is very low. Today we waited 4 hours for caninsulin to be dispensed for my dog - at double the price than other vets btw. (You can buy caninsulin online for $42). After coming by once at two hours in and waiting 20 minutes we asked them to call when it was ready. They called at 1:30 and when we got to the clinic 7 minutes before close time of 2:00pm on Saturday the closed sign was already on the window and the door was locked. Lucky for us (and them) a younger vet tech finally opened the door when the lady at the desk sat shaking her head no and was clearly not going to get up to open the door. Upon entering and asking for the caninsulin my dog desperately needed because we accidentally dropped the other vial late the previous night the front desk lady proceeded to tell me I was lucky she opened the door and that it was 2:03. I showed her my apple phone indicating that it was 1:57pm and got attitude. I am done with this vet. For my next puppy I will never set foot near this place that will not address this front desk employee. These photos are taken BEFORE 2:00pm as per my real time on my apple iPhone and she was not going to answer the door. Thank goodness for the younger vet tech. (Thank you!!). Otherwise my dog might not have gotten caninsulin for over two days and may have died.
