How to Save Money at Humber Bay Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We are very grateful for the care and help we received from Dr. Pacia and the entire staff 🥰 My dog has been a patient since 2021, the doctor guided us through her pregnancy, she sterilized all three of them perfectly and continues to care for the entire family. The clinic is well-equipped and its team is friendly and ready to help all patients. We sincerely recommend this clinic and wish the team further success in the care and treatment of our small and large friends👍

I cannot express enough gratitude for the exceptional care Dr. Pacia provided for my beloved Maverick. From the moment we walked in, it was clear that she genuinely loves animals and deeply cares about Maverick's well-being. It was also obvious that Dr. Pacia is a devoted dog owner herself, which made her compassion and understanding even more special. Her professionalism, warmth, and expertise were evident every step of the way. Dr. Pacia took the time to thoroughly explain Maverick's condition and patiently answered all my questions, ensuring I felt comfortable and informed. Her gentle and calm demeanor immediately put Maverick at ease, making the entire experience stress-free for both of us. Thanks to her incredible care and attention to detail, Maverick's foot is now fully healed, and he’s back to his happy, playful self. I feel so fortunate to have found such an amazing veterinarian. I would highly recommend Dr. Pacia to anyone seeking top-notch veterinary care. Thank you for all that you do!

My senior dog as well as my other relatives pets have been coming here for years and haven’t had any issues. There will always be expenses for a senior dog like mine but they are upfront kind and transparent, they won’t force any procedures or make you feel guilty for not being able to afford it. There are always alternatives and they work hard to try to save my dog and are very gentle. All vets are costly and at least when I spend it here I know they really are trying their best to help. Thank you for everything. Side note: I’ve been and heard of other vet fees/expenses and Humber bay is very fair in terms of pricing. And very accommodating to last minute appointments.

You used to be able to witness your dog getting its shots, now they just take the dog away to the back room and come back a few minutes later and say it’s done, you can’t see what they do. My dog is healthy and I reported zero concerns, They charged me an additional $110 for a “health check” on top of the vaccines and said I needed to come back 4 weeks later for a booster, at which point they charged me again $70 for a “Recheck”. This is a healthy dog with no issues or concerns, no tests of any kind were run, these so called checks happen in the back room where no one can see what’s being done, they don’t tell you about up front it’s just added to your bill. Dishonest practice! it’s a shameless money grab!!

Never take your elder pet here. Get taken advantage of by all the tests offered without any verbal communication of how much they cost then present you with a 2 thousand+ dollar bill. Ridiculous. Then she recommends for HER to euthanize your pet on the spot so what was the point in the 2k tests? By the way killing your pet also has extra fees beyond the baseline because they quote "send a small part of the ashes to somewhere in Ontario to be in a communal graveyard plot." LOL OKAY Greedy, disgusting and I'd never visit this vet again even if they were the last one available that night.
