How to Save Money at Orleans Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

An Unforgettable Experience of Compassion and Care Words cannot fully capture the depth of gratitude my partner and I feel for the Animal Hospital and its incredible staff during the most challenging and heartbreaking time of our lives. Our beloved dog, Magnus, a rare and beautiful white German Shepherd, was not just a pet but an extension of ourselves, a part of our family, our hearts, and our home. He was only seven years old when he suddenly fell ill, and our world was shattered by the news that he had lymphoma cancer. From the very beginning, the team at the Animal Hospital treated Magnus with the utmost compassion and care. When we first brought him in, they suspected an ear infection and provided medication, hoping it was something minor. But when his condition didn’t improve, they didn’t hesitate to take the next steps. They were transparent about the costs, showing a deep understanding of the financial strain that medical care can bring. However, when I made it clear that Magnus' health was the priority and not the expense, their approach immediately shifted. They responded with urgency and compassion, securing a critical ultrasound appointment within just three days—a turnaround that truly reflects their dedication to their patients. On the day of the ultrasound, the vet and technician worked tirelessly to get to the root of the problem. Although the results were not entirely conclusive, they showed us incredible honesty and empathy by explaining their findings and what lay ahead. They informed us that Magnus would never be the same, and his quality of life would continue to decline. Rather than pushing for costly treatments, they considered what was best for Magnus, knowing he would never regain the life he once had. The decision to let Magnus go was the hardest choice we’ve ever had to make. It was clear that undergoing further treatments like chemotherapy would have been a form of torture for him. The entire team respected this decision and treated Magnus with the dignity and love he deserved in his final moments. They recognized the immense bond we shared with Magnus and went above and beyond by arranging a separate cremation—something they didn't have to do but chose to out of sheer kindness. Knowing that our boy came home to us "untainted" is a comfort we can never thank them enough for. In his final moments, Magnus looked up at us, his eyes heavy from the anesthetic, and let out a small, heart-wrenching grunt as if to say, "Take me home." That moment broke us, but the kindness, empathy, and respect shown by the Animal Hospital staff helped us through the most painful goodbye of our lives. Though our home now feels empty, and the silence is deafening, we are forever grateful to the Animal Hospital. They didn’t just care for Magnus—they cared for us. They took into account our emotional state, our love for Magnus, and helped guide us with grace and understanding. If ever there were a place that truly puts the well-being of both animals and their owners first, it is this Animal Hospital. Thank you to each and every one of you who treated Magnus as if he were your own, who helped us make the most difficult decisions with compassion, and who honored our wishes without hesitation. Your kindness has left an imprint on our hearts, just as our dear Magnus did.

They take such good care of my pup and make every effort to limit the stress on him using all kinds of yummy treats (he sometimes comes out with his mouth covered in doggie Cheez Whiz, haha!). All of our experiences with them have been amazing, as is their staff. We’ve dealt with Dr. Gold, Dr. Streib, and Dr. Kerr and all have been great, catching an unexpected blood condition before surgery and making sure we were well informed of all options to proceed. They’ve also called to check in on him after taking him to an emergency vet - so sweet! Have never been in the clinic due to COVID protocols, but drop off is so easy with their efficient system.
