How to Save Money at Nottawasaga Valley Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We've been taking our cats to NVVH since we moved to the area in 2014. We absolutely love the care our cats have received here. The staff are all amazing, compassionate people. We have had some health scares and concerns with our cats and all the staff here do a great job to explain everything in detail as well as making us feel cared for in the process. We appreciate that they also connect to check in our pets after various procedures. Cannot say enough good things about this team. Thanks for all that you do.

We are so thankful for these guys. Our cat needed exploratory surgery for a possible obstruction after three days of being horribly sick, and we were extremely panicked. They were so quick to squeeze her in, and so informative of everything they were going to be doing. They called during the surgery telling us every step they had taken and gave us options on what to do next. They didn't pressure us into paying any extra money or doing any unnecessary testing, they actually saved us quite a bit, and found out quickly what was wrong with our girl. Another vet quoted us at almost $7000 for less than what was done here and we paid no where near that amount. We are so grateful, the staff is amazing and truly cares for the animals. Thank you so much.

I have been using this Vet for my dog for the last two years. Rarely has my pet had any major issues but just over a month ago she started showing signs of a urinary tract infection. After an initial exam ($143.25) and analysis of her urine ($116.39) I was told the infection was bad and it would be another whopping $180.00 to send the Urine to a lab to do a culture and prescribe the most effective antibiotic. I unfortunately did not have the extra funds. I was charged for an antibiotic ($75.53) and sent away. The vet even told me to wipe and clean the dog down there, but didn't bother to do so themselves before we left. I was told I should bring her back 2 weeks after the antibiotic had run it's course to re check her urine for Bacteria. A week after the antibiotics were done and my dog is still peeing more frequently that normal. The clinic says the follow up Urine test is $65.00. My dog has vaccinations coming up which would be $180.00. So I ask the clinic to please forgo the fee for the follow up, especially give I'll likely have to send the urine away and do another course of antibiotics. They flat out refused claiming the $65.00 fee would keep them from paying their staff. I find that ridiculous as any Veterinarian office that is $65.00 from shutting it's doors would have closed soon after opening. After going to another clinic I found out their initial exam is just $101.50 and their Urine analysis is $188.00 with the culture send away. Nottawasaga Valley Vet is charging about 30% more for each procedure then gouging for the lab send away. The clinic manager Samantha Hamilton claimed they care about animals, but if this were true, they wouldn't be gouging customers so much more than another clinic and they'd be reasonable about keeping my business and helping with the minor fee. Instead some words were exchanged and I'm now with a reputable clinic with better fees which simply translates to better accessibility of care for animals. I will continue to direct all my local peers, personal and business, away from this clinic. Best regards,

They are fantastic here and really do care about your pet. I have been with them for 8 years and they have always been gentle. They have very fair prices and they don’t pressure you into any extra costs, you can be very transparent with your budget. Dr. Angela helped us say goodbye to our dog and it was done so peacefully in our home. I will always be grateful to her and the team for how easy they made it on us during that difficult time.

I have just initially brought my dog to this place. However, have not had any appointments as of yet. Initially I have heard good things about them so that's why I'm going to give them a try.
