How to Save Money at Sunny Coast Equine Veterinary

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am a trainer at a farm in Estero and I am very grateful for Dr. Carla's expertise and treatment offerings for our horses! Two of our horses this year were diagnosed with Kissing Spines. We were very disheartened and worried about treatment options as so many horses with KS end up retiring or going through intensive surgeries. Dr. Carla is SO knowledgeable in this area and recommended a combination of acupuncture, osphos, and shockwave. After just three treatments our horses have TRANSFORMED, their back soreness has gone down significantly, their bodies have physically transformed, and they are happy and excited to work. The fact that we can see this change in such a short period of time and without using any anti-inflammatory drugs or even steroid injections is huge. I highly recommend Dr. Carla if you are looking for a more natural, but effective, approach to help your horse from the inside out!

I have used Sunny Coast Veterinary since 2012. Dr Carla is a brilliant veterinarian. She's incredibly intuitive and educated. I feel her approach is always from a place of true experience and in the best interest of the horse. Her knowledge of commonly misdiagnosed disease is incredible. She is highly skilled in disease and lameness and truly loves her job. I recommend Dr Carla to all my clients.

I called them on regular line, and had to call again to write down ER phone number. My horse passed away overnight. I texted vet to get phone number of a service that could pick up horse. I was scrolling through google trying to find another vet, found one, not listed as Sunny Coast but a vet name, called it, not realizing it was her. I then received a nasty, nasty and rude text from Dr Carla because I called her 3 times!!! In my state of mind I did not realize it was the same number. Granted it was a Sunday but an honest mistake and I didn’t mean to call her that many times. Then she made a joke about a dying horse. Totally unprofessional. Unsympathetic. Didn’t expect a professional veterinarian to talk to ANYONE like that. I was already emotional but she was downright mean. Would NEVER, EVER recommend her to anyone.

The best equine vet ever! Carla has always been there when needed, and saved our horse's life. She and her staff have always been reliable, knowledgeable and all around amazing! i would not go anywhere else for my horses care even for routine and annual vaccinations, I am confident in the quality of her work and her supplies. She stays up-to-date on new technologies, merging them with current and classic approaches to get the best for each animal treated. she is simply the best.

Dr Carla and Dr Kayla are some of the Greatest doctors to work with my horses. Sunny coast veterinary has been working on my horse duke for over 10 years now. Unfortunately, This morning was a very sad morning after deciding to do one last good thing for my horse, duke. Dr Kayla came out and took me threw the process step by step. What I loved about her was that she was very personable and professional which made me stay strong and not cry during the euthanasia, which was what I wanted. I was able to give him kisses, and lots of love as he was going down and he went out perfectly and peacefully. Horse euthanasias are tough but I couldn't have played it out anymore perfectly in my head. Thanks to all the great people that practice medicine at this practice. I highly recommend!
