How to Save on Veterinary Costs at Alico Pet Vet

Preventive care

Routine wellness exams can help identify health issues early, often before they become more serious or expensive to treat. Regular checkups are one of the most effective ways to manage long term veterinary costs.

Compare prescription pricing

Some pet medications prescribed at veterinary clinics may also be available through local or online pharmacies. It can be helpful to compare pricing when appropriate to reduce ongoing medication costs.

Consider pet insurance

Pet insurance may help cover a portion of eligible veterinary expenses depending on the plan, including accidents, illnesses, and in some cases preventive care. Coverage details, reimbursement levels, and deductibles vary by provider.

Getting to Know Your Veterinarian

Experience

Ask whether the clinic has experience treating your specific type of pet, since care can vary between dogs, cats, and pocket pets.

Emergency Care Procedures

It’s helpful to understand how the clinic handles after-hours emergencies, including whether they provide emergency services or refer to nearby emergency hospitals.

Communication Preferences

Ask how the clinic communicates with pet parents, including updates, test results, and follow up questions.

Breed Specific Health Considerations

Some breeds may be more prone to certain health conditions. Early awareness can help with prevention and early treatment.

We met Dr. Leena in July 2025. She made us an immediate priority, making herself available for many questions and concerns we had. She immediately carefully reviewed our medications, made recommendations on dosages, timing as well as supplements that greatly improved the short time we had left together. Dr. Leena was kind, considerate, and gave us her best advice. She is a beautiful person both inside and out. I had the pleasure of meeting her beautiful daughter, her lovely staff, and touring her facility. She is top notch and any pet under her care is in good hands. She is so kind and helped us navigate through very difficult times. I always felt she had a grounded and reliable perspective. Thank you Dr. Leena for all you have done for Lucky and me.

Our dog loves Dr. Leena Plavumkal. She’s kind and smart. Works hard to help your animal whatever stage of life she is in. She knows the way to the dog’s heart with peanut butter. :-) Summer rocks. Very straight forward and a pleasure to work with to keep your pet going strong!

We are seasonal and didn’t have a local vet. Our Jack Russell Terrier developed a seasonal allergy and was miserable so I called Alico and was pleased that they offered me a same day appointment. Dr. Leena and staff are wonderful and our dog got the care and meds she needed. Very happy to now have a local vet and we would definitely recommend.

Dr. Leena and her vet tech were both amazing. They were gentle, kind and patient with my brothers dogs who tend to be more on the anxious side, really taking their time and allowing them to adjust and adapt. You can tell they truly care about the animals they see and there was a supply of peanut butter ready to be given. Thank you so much!
