How to Save Money at Riverdale Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’m not one to leave a review, especially a bad review. Everyone operates differently and has good/bad days. However…. I’ve trained, competed, and worked with many different vets over the years. This is the only vet that will deny every single prescription request you send them for simple refills such as heart worm topical. I’ve had 20-30 prescriptions filled by different vets without one being denied. This vet has denied 3 of 3, always claiming we are in need of checkup before they can approve it. (Enter vets comment about our dogs being due for a heart worm test)… our dogs aren’t due for months. They said they will approve a 2 month prescription, it’s sold in 3, 6, or 12 nor do I have the time to bring my dogs in so you can take a 35 second look at them and then approve it. They get salty that you’re not buying from them… I explained to them I will have my dogs in for their shots when due which is the same time our female is due for her heart worm test. After reading some other reviews it appears this is a trend. Spend your hard earned dollars elsewhere. As a business owner I know the importance of building trust and long standing customer relationships. When I explained they were going to lose my business over something so small on their part, they didn’t care. Not only did they lose a customer, but bad word travels 10x faster than good. Bad business in my opinion, but hey they will figure it out…

Dr. Shewmaker and his staff are amazing, kind, compassionate, and very skilled at what they do. My cat was very sick, and I was very worried about her. She wasn't able to eat, and threw up what she tried to eat. The staff at Riverdale Veterinary Clinic were able to schedule a visit the same day, which is so valuable to me to get in that quickly. They ran tests, and were able to treat her immediately. After they treated her, and once I returned home and gave her the prescribed medication, she ate her food right away. Everyone is very kind and understanding, every visit, explaining how they can help, answering questions, and listening to any additional requests and concerns. If you're looking for a high quality, thorough vet, you will get the best care possible with Dr. Shewmaker and staff. He has provided care for both my cat and dog, and does an amazing job! I highly recommend! Thank you Dr. Shewmaker and staff! ❤️

I was turned off by some of the reviews I read, but I was impressed by the pricing I was quoted beforehand and their availability to get me in quickly (I was offered same day but needed the next day) so I decided to go. My cat had fleas so I was just going for a treatment. The inside looked newly renovated and was warm and clean and was the first vet I have been to that didn’t have a stinky office. I was greeted immediately by a kind receptionist and taken right back. The vet tech was very nice and knowledgeable and discussed what they believed my cat needed for his treatment. I was told the prices of everything before I consented (the most reasonable prices I’ve paid at a vet) and then the vet came in. There are some negative comments on the vet’s demeanor. I found him very professional. He’s a man, not Miss Congeniality. He answered all of my questions and was very kind with my cat. I was expecting a scary man based on some reviews and that’s absolutely not what I was met with. I don’t know what the problem was for the other people who commented. I had an incredibly positive experience with this office and will absolutely return for anything I need. Fair, efficient, kind, and clean. Btw, I read comments saying the receptionists were snarky and rude. When I walked in I could see a dog wrapped in a blanket with an IV and the receptionists were surrounding the dog and petting it to make it comfortable. 🤷🏼‍♀️

If I could give MORE than 5 stars for Riverdale Veterinary Clinic, I would!!! We are new to the area, and I made an appointment for our dog because he was dealing with an issue. Not only did they squeeze us into the schedule early the next day to get him checked (and to accommodate my work schedule), the vet knew what the issue was right away and instantly helped our dog and fixed the issue! Our dog feels so much better, and I'm relieved it wasn't something major. Everyone in the office is friendly and warm, and they handled everything with professionalism, integrity and care. Thank you to the entire team!!!
