How to Save Money at West End Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

West End really came through for us while we were visiting from out of the country. Our dog developed an ear infection on our trip, and after getting a script from a Televet we had the hardest time finding a place able to fill it. It would have been easy for them to brush us off and not fill the medications since we aren’t and won’t be a regular patient. West End did it same day for us before a weekend, and went out of their way to help our poor pup get some relief right away. Thank you!!

In summary, this experience was disappointing. The services felt pushy and rushed, they ignored our explanations, and added services without our consent or any cost estimation. Thank you for seeing my puppy without an appointment. However, the service I received was not what I expected. I had heard good recommendations about your clinic, but my experience was disappointing. After a friendly interaction with the lady at the front desk, the nurse who came to assess the situation seemed very distracted by another dog and ignored my husband when he was speaking about my puppy's problem. She interrupted him, rushing the conversation by saying, "Yes, well, I will take her to the back, and she may need an x-ray!" This left us confused—why would an x-ray be necessary for an allergy issue? The situation felt very hurried, and we didn't have a chance to fully explain our concerns. Already anxious about our puppy's allergy, we agreed to the check-up out of concern, but we didn't understand why an x-ray was being suggested. Without consulting us, they decided to conduct a microscopic study, despite my husband explaining that we had already done one. Dr. Child then came in and explained my puppy's situation, but her attitude was awkward. She looked at me as if I didn't understand the language. While I understand there can be language barriers since English is not my native language, her demeanour felt rude and disappointing. -Place not recommended.

Overall had a terrible experience at this vet. Went for an annual check up and it ended up costing us almost $1000. Pressured us into doing extra vaccinations (rabies, etc.) for our indoor only cat. The actual exam was less than 15 minutes and at no time did we feel like she actually cared at all for our pet. Would not recommend to anyone.

We have only the best experience at the West End Vet. Dr. Childs and her staff were very helpful and thorough when providing us with information for our decision making. The only reason we left West End Vet was because we were moving out of the country - where Nathan, one of the staff, was very organized and detailed in his assistance with all the documentation needed for our pups' move. We will always miss West End Vet! We were very sad when we had our last picture with Dr. Childs and staff. Thank you guys and hope to see you again one day!

Once again Dr. Childs and her staff were phenomenal taking care of my boy. A very challenging issue arose and we were walked through all possible avenues diligently and respectfully. Without a doubt my veterinary office for life.
