How to Save Money at Vancouver Downtown Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am so greatful for Dr. Alan Namazi and his staff Angel , I can not be anymore thankful for their compassion and help with what we needed done. You see, my cat was very very sick last week and took him to Atlas hospital which I would NOT go there ever again they not only hurt my cat right in front of me but they were completely rude because I did not $2000 for observation and catheter, he was severely dehydrated as well the only thing he would do was send pain meds home with us . I then asked him if he could at least do a sub Q since he is severely dehydrated and some antibiotics to see if that will start him urinating again, so after $190 we got home and have to force squirt water down my boy every 2hours d stopped drinking then after calling around to every vet , I got refused to everyone so then I got a friend to help me with a go fund me page so I can get donations for his care when we got it, and then I posted a picture of Mosach and basically a help us add on the NextDoor web site and on there had many suggestions and greatful for all the replies but one person that wanted to stay anonymous help us out with homeopathic remedies and that got him urinating again along with the antibiotics ande putting water in him , and she said I had to stop feeding him dry food and give him only wet food for urinary issues well that's a problem because He does not like it and we have done everything but so I kept calling around and finally the humane society hooked us up with the Mc Veties Foundation that donated us $500 to toward is care but we needed to find a vet by August 1st, well my hopes were low and stressed to the max and finally I filled out a application for funding at one place because they don't turn anyone away and so we were planning to go there on Tuesday but something told me to call them again and good thing I did because really I don't know what my actions what have done to find out they can't help us . Like really not even to check him over like really. WOW , I thought to my self 90% of Vets seem to only care about money and not the fact that humans live only because they have a pet in their life a pet is everything to a person do they not get that anymore, anyways I had one last number to call and that was Vancouver Downtown Pet Hospital where Dr. Alan Namazi works and his staff Angel was very nice to talk to on the phone and I was absolutely shocked that she told us to come in down and we will see what we can do. Mosach (Moo-Saw) may have not needed surgery as we thought he needed over the weekend , but antibiotics are just a bandaid and urinary track infection or blockage can get worse over time so with the visit we had and the donations from Mc Vetie and from go fund me helped us pay for all the tests and x-ray blood work urine test and more meds for his anxiety . We have finally found Our vet and I would recommend them to everyone . And after the week I have had and I am on disability and low income yes I had to find donations but I'm sure they would have helped matter what , but I am going to get pet insurance for sure , even tho in the future they will not help cover this problem because it's a preexisting issues but for anything else that pops up , we will be covered and I will not stress as much as I did this week . So thank you again VDPH Love Angela & Mosach

Caleb (miniature schnauzer) is really happy with his care he recieves @ Vancouver downtown pet hospital. Whenever he walks by the front door during closing hours, he would go and sit at the front door and look into the clinic for a little bit and then resume his walk.

The clinic has badly burned our cat during spaying with a heating pad. If you care about your pets, avoid this clinic or risk exposing them to the negligence of the people here. We brought our kitten here for spaying, and after picking Luna up, we noticed sensitivity on her side, which we initially attributed to recovery after the surgery. However, when the pain didn’t improve over time and areas of hardened skin resembling a crust began to develop, we brought her back to Dr. Namazi for a check-up. He not only FAILED TO IDENTIFY THAT SOMETHING WAS WRONG, but also got seemingly frustrated that we even suspected something might have happened to her during the spaying. He determined the cat was totally fine and waved us home. Utterly disappointed with the visit, we went straight to another clinic. Well, a doctor there identified a burn on her side, the healing of which took a considerable amount of time. After examining the burn more closely, the hypothesis we were told was that she had come into contact with something hot enough for long enough to leave such a significant burn. This absolutely could not have happened at home (how would she tolerate such heat?), and the only way it would have been possible is during anesthesia after the spaying.

I was greeted by a staff member who directed me into an examination room. Angel came in and sat with us and asked me to describe in detail what the problem was with my cat, all the while treating me with compassion. Then Dr. Namazi came in to see her and he took his time examining her while he spoke to me. He didn’t push for bloodwork and a whole bunch of tests which I greatly appreciated because my cat is a very senior cat. He did suggest a medication to soothe her arthritis pain but didn’t push at that time. He merely gave me an information pamphlet and encouraged me to research it. Of all the vets my cat has seen over the years Dr. Namazi is my favourite, he is personable, calm, knowledgeable and respectful. You can tell he has a very deep love of animals.

Can’t say enough amazing things about Dr. Alan and his team. Our babygirl Harlowe is 6.5 months old now, and she’s had all of her vaccinations + most recently spay and rear dewclaw removal a few days ago. Staff is kind, thoughtful, and very professional. Harlowe gets so excited to go to the vet because she knows she’s going to get tons of attention, pets and treats. The clinic is located where we usually walk along the seawall and anytime we pass it she stops and wants to go inside. Dr. Alan always answers all of my questions thoroughly and is very gentle and calm with Harlowe. Follow-up is never missed. Clinic itself is clean and modern. Pricing for everything is fair and reasonable, and in some cases even less than I expected. Highly recommend.
