How to Save Money at Paws on Fraser Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I want to thank Dr. Jenna for her utmost professionalism and compassion in caring for our lab, Java, these past 5 months. Dr. Jenna diagnosed Java's Mast Cell Tumour 5 months ago, and carefully walked us through the different options. Unfortunately, Java's cancer had spread and no option was curative. I greatly appreciated how Dr. Jenna did not pressure us into any aggressive treatments and focused on Java's quality of life throughout. Sadly, we had to bring Java in for her final visit to Paws a few days ago. Although they were just about to close at 6 PM on a Saturday, Dr. Jenna and her staff stayed late to put Java to rest. Thank you Dr. Jenna, and everyone who stayed later, so that Java did not have to endure any suffering until you re-opened on Monday. Your commitment to Java's comfort in her final moments was so greatly appreciated.

I took my first puppy, Benny, to Dr. Yuen at another clinic in 2005 and, because of the great care she gave Benny, and then Halle, I had to follow her to her new clinic. I could not ask for a better vet. Dr. Yuen is friendly, compassionate, caring and knowledgeable and I could not imagine entrusting my 3lb dog to anyone else. She and her staff have taken such good care of my tiny Halle and, even though Halle had numerous visits last fall for blood tests, she still loves going to the vet. She was treated with great care by Dr. Yuen, Nadia, and the rest of the staff, and I am grateful for the love they show to my little pup every time we see them. Halle has no fear of going to the vet even though she’s had to get numerous needles! All the staff are lovely and very clearly animal lovers. I encourage every pet owner I know to go to Paws on Fraser and those that have taken my advice have been equally pleased with the care their pets have received. Allison

I truly appreciate everything Dr. Jenna did for my dog and me. I’m incredibly grateful for how she approached my reactive dog, making both of us feel comfortable and never making me feel embarrassed about his reactivity towards the vet. The team at this veterinary hospital are absolute angels! A special thank you to Dr. Kristine as well for your help! :)

I've visited many vets in Vancouver and Burnaby, and Dr. Hewitt-Kenda and Dr. Kong stand out as exceptional. The front reception team is incredibly supportive and friendly, making a big difference. I believe the best clinics not only have skilled veterinarians but also a strong, efficient administrative team. Pricing is fair, and the facility is clean and modern, unlike some older, outdated clinics. Highly recommend this place!

I have been taking my kitten, Pigman, to Paws on Fraser for four months. Most of our first visits were for the typical vaccines and deworming that a kitten needs. In regards to this, Paws on Fraser is not only fairly priced but one of the most comfortable and welcoming veterinary experiences I have had. The staff are friendly, the waiting room is well done, they approach every issue with detail and conveniently, they have a pet store a few doors down from their location. (Though I would recommend checking out Happy Cat a few blocks down Fraser) Over the last week, however dear Pigman has had to come in for a few small and large emergencies. From the conversations had over the phone, to the patience and kindness that the doctors and nurses showed, Paws has outdone every vet I have been to in my many years of being a cat owner. I truly couldn’t recommend them more to new pet owners / someone looking for a better vet experience.
