How to Save Money at North West Nuclear Med-Animals

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I haven’t had the iodine treatment done yet, but I wanted to share my experience so far. I’ve been in contact with the clinic multiple times to discuss my cat’s candidacy, and they were extremely thorough and generous with their time. They carefully explained every step of the process and answered all my questions in detail. The information they shared was very helpful and easy to understand, and it gave me a lot of confidence in their expertise. Based on these interactions, I feel reassured that when my cat does go in for treatment, he will be very well cared for. We just need to complete some additional blood work to confirm he’s healthy, and then we plan to move forward with treatment in the new year.

A year after Jarrod’s I-131 treatment at North West Nuclear Medicine for Animals, he’s happier, healthier, and medication-free. I've been meaning to post this review for a while. Jarrod — who had textbook signs of hyperthyroidism — received his treatment here, and he has his life back. He was severely underweight at around 5 lb before treatment (the last photo I shared is from before), and within six months climbed to about 11.8 lb — an impressive increase. I am so grateful to have come across I-131 treatment for hyperthyroid cats. I don't regret committing to this radiotherapy instead of leaving him on medication that doesn’t fix the root problem. The doctors were very knowledgeable and understanding, providing expert advice so we could make an informed decision. Looking back, I feel we made the right choice. Jarrod no longer has daily diarrhea, doesn’t vomit several times every few weeks, and has stopped stealing food off the counter despite being fed not long ago. I was impressed that the scaled dosage was perfect for Jarrod — it was a long process with follow-up T4 blood tests, but totally worth it since he would have needed frequent blood tests if he’d stayed on felimazole. Fast forward to today: his T4 levels are within range and his blood work is very good for his age. We’re fortunate he no longer needs any medication post-treatment. We would make the same decision again. There was a chance he could become hypothyroid after treatment, but even then that’s a much less risky prognosis and far less toll on his organs. Conversely, staying on felimazole long-term could have risked his kidneys, so we still would have chosen treatment. He’s living his best life. We were blessed to have found North West Nuclear Medicine for Animals. From the bottom of my heart, and on behalf of my mom and Jarrod, I’d like to thank Dr. Harvey, Dr. Dean, and RVTs Mari and Brianne for their patience, understanding, attentiveness, and professionalism — and especially for the daily calls that kept me updated throughout Jarrod’s stay. I hope I-131 treatment gets more awareness — many cat owners might not know this option exists. 支持貓咪甲狀腺亢進碘-131療法.

The NWNM team treated my cat Tuna recently and the entire team was amazing. This entire team is so passionate about the work they do. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or team. Bri handmade Tuna a collar sprayed in a calming cat pheromone to keep her comfortable (and looking very cute). I was updated by their lovely techs Bri, Mari and Lori during her stay. She had lots of time outside her kennel to explore. The biggest and most heartfelt thank you to Dr Dean for creating her treatment plan and treating her and a thank you to the entire team that cared for Tuna. If anyone is nervous about their cat spending time away from home, know that they will be so loved and well cared for by this team 💗

My cat Tom needed a treatment for his thyroid and I was recommended North West Nuclear Med by my vet. I have nothing but good things to say! They were very welcoming, friendly and professional. They called me everyday at 10:30am to let me know how my cat was doing and were very thorough. I felt comfortable leaving my cat with them and knew he was being well taken care of! Everything went smoothly - payment, drop off, pick up, clear pre and post treatment instructions. They answered all my questions and left me feeling well assured and I love that they have an Instagram page where they post photos of your cat while they are away! ♥️ Thank you for taking care of my Tom Cat and I would definitely recommend them to anyone!

Thank you to all the Vets, RVTs and other staff who treated and cared for Trooper this January. Also thanks for always being there to answer questions I had along the way. Appreciate all the pre and post treatment support for us, the daily updates during her treatment, and social posts to let us know how she was doing! She is doing great and in normal T4 range since her treatment! 💗😻
