How to Save Money at Peace Arch Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Brought my beautiful 8 month old British short hair here to get fixed. Took him in a couple days before hand and payed several hundred dollars to make sure he was healthy and good to go for surgery. They told me he was so strong they had to sedate him to get the blood work. Said he was super healthy and good to go. Took him in a couple days later and he got fixed. Three days later I got home from work and he was breathing really strange so I called the office and they had me come in. They were so rude and told me I had to take him to emergency and that whatever was happening with him had nothing to do with the surgery. Took him to emergency and he was coughing up blood and it was coming out his nose. He died. My beautiful healthy baby just died. They never contacted me and passed it off as if he had an underlying condition. Why did I pay all that money to make sure he was good for surgery??? This place is a joke. They don’t care about you or your animals.

My boys are very happy when they see their favourite assistant Katherine. All their treatments what they had to be done are every time explained to me. My boys are Peterbalds and the first of their kind in the veterinary. But if they need a treatment the vet and assistants make sure they know about the breed. We are very happy and pleased with Peace arch veterinary hospital.

I have had only positive interactions at this clinic when I bring my kitten. The staff are kind, knowledgeable, and appear to recommend and perform only what is best for my pet. The quality of care seems on par with, if not above, other vets in the area. My wife and I each had one concern, but neither was related to the quality of their work. First, my wife was uncomfortable with vaccinations being done in the back rather than in front of us. While the vet explained the reasoning, which made logistical sense to me, most other vets we’ve visited perform vaccinations in front of pet owners. Several pet owners we’ve spoken to also prefer this approach as it puts them more at ease. Secondly, after one visit, we noticed a clear "2" mark in our kitten's ear. While it rubbed off after a day, it was unsettling. The vet assured us they did not make the mark, and I believe them, but we’re unsure where it came from since it wasn’t there prior to the visit. Regarding pricing, there may have been a misunderstanding between my wife and the clinic staff when discussing the cost of vaccinations. My wife recalls being quoted $250 for both rounds of vaccines, but we were charged $438 in total. While there may have been a miscommunication, $438 for two rounds of vaccines feels high compared to other clinics. Additionally, I chose to have my kitten neutered at a different clinic because their quote was less than half of what I was quoted here. I would encourage this clinic to consider being more cost-competitive and to provide the option of performing simple procedures, such as vaccinations, in front of pet owners. This transparency could enhance customer satisfaction and trust. Overall, I hope this feedback is taken as constructive criticism to help the clinic improve its services. I also encourage future customers to communicate their expectations regarding costs and procedures to ensure a smooth experience.

****Edit to owners response, every negative comment being responded to this way is a definite red flag. June 14th was the final time I called and my dog’s records were finally sent and no, I have not made a bad review about my previous vet, they were lovely. Unlike this practice**** Very expensive and when I tried to get my dog’s records sent to a new clinic it took 2 months and multiple calls from myself and the new clinic. Only to be told I had a balance remaining, which nobody had contacted me about the hold up. Transferring my dogs records was really important as he was getting worse and the new vet wanted to see what happened previously. I did not enjoy my experience at this clinic.

Dr. Gurbinder was very professional and thorough with his examination of my cat Luke. Luke was experiencing a high fever and was very lethargic. I opted out of getting X-rays and bloodwork done and just got Luke to receive IV fluids and antibiotics. The vet assistant was very professional and she was very helpful when I needed help understanding what Luke needed done for aftercare. Luke came out looking much better than he did coming in. The clinic was very clean. Prices- I paid 546ish for exam and iv fluids, if I got blood work done it would have cost just under a grand. So I figured starting with iV fluids first and see how he is later. I will make an update in a couple days.
