How to Save Money at All Creatures Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

To All Creatures Animal Hospital staff and Dr. Anderson, We are writing this letter with overwhelming grief and complete dissatisfaction regarding the treatment our beloved precious one-year-old budgie received at your clinic on Sunday. Our little bird was not just a pet to us—he was a cherished and beloved member of our family, and his loss has left us heartbroken. He was a super healthy and active one-year-old budgie, and he was very loved by both my husband and me. On Saturday, we went out for a few hours and when we came back, he was tilting his neck back and forth a bit. So, on Sunday, we brought our budgie to All Creatures Animal Hospital in the hope of receiving professional care and appropriate treatment from Dr. Anderson. However, to our utter dismay, instead of receiving the proper treatment, our bird was prescribed medication meant for a dog or cat. Tragically, within just a few hours of administering this medication, we lost our magnificent little budgie. His facial features (under his beak started to change, and he was very lethargic and had multiple dark-coloured diarrhea). I called the office in panic mode a couple of hours after we got home and left a message for the office that he was not feeling well at all and what should we do. To this moment, there has been no call or answer from your professional office!!!!!! The profound distress and sadness we are now experiencing as a result of this negligence are beyond words. We trusted your facility and Dr. Anderson to provide competent and safe medical care for our bird, but instead, this avoidable mistake has cost our budgie his life. It is completely unacceptable that such an error was made—a mistake that any trained veterinarian should have caught, especially considering the stark differences in the physiology of a small bird compared to a dog. The failure to properly assess and prescribe the correct treatment demonstrates a lack of care and responsibility that we never expected to encounter at a professional animal hospital!! We are deeply saddened and angered by the loss of our beloved bird, and we want it known that we hold All Creatures Animal Hospital and Dr. Anderson directly responsible for this devastating outcome. This event has shattered our trust in your clinic and left us questioning the standard of care you provide. What's even more bizarre is your receptionist (Ina) excuses when I called on Monday to see why nobody had returned my call and that my baby bird passed away. She was like we are understaffed and have been busy!!! I searched on the internet and was confirmed by your receptionist, Ina, that the medication you gave to my baby bird is meant for cats and dogs. Even if it's a "laxative" or whatever else, why would you give such a thing to such a tiny and delicate creature??????? I feel that was like an acid, which burned my baby bird's digestive tracks!!!! All you did to charge me for a visit and a medication that led to my baby bird passing only a few hours later!!!!! We are asking for a proper logical explanation for how such a gross oversight occurred. Kathy S.

Avoid this “practitioner” at all cost. Phil Andersen, the vet at this clinic. Does not wash his hands in between clients. Does not sanitize his equipment. I watched him use a butt thermometer out the drawer without cleaning it and then placing it in his pocket ready for next use. Extremely heavy handed and abrasive. Rushes you out as fast as he can. Prescribes the first medicine he can think of with no explanation of why. Had to be reminded to check my bunnies ears and mouth and temperature when I came in for a follow up. Caused my rabbits wound to re open from careless handling and not having his assisting staff hold down the bunnie, which is standard procedure. Did not re wrap the wound, kept picking at the wound with bare hands. Caused the wound to balloon up and need to be re wrapped and then tried to charge me for his careless mistake. There is a large lack of emotional intelligence with Phil and he is the staple example of the stereotypical vet that only wants you to come in to make money off your situation of caring for your loving pet. The girls at the front desk are lovely. Please go to a better veterinary that will care for your pets.

We took our hamster here and got in the same day that I sent an email inquiring about what to do. The receptionist and Doctor were both lovely, we had to put my hamster down in the end but the doctor gave us options and we felt like we left our sick hamster in good hands. We would definitely bring our future pet back here. Thanks again!

I have been taking my cat & dog to Dr Andersen for 10 years. This week it was time to put my 17 year old cat to sleep. It was really difficult for me, but Dr Andersen and his assistant were extremely kind and supportive. I can say after all these years both my animals and now myself have received the best care. Thank you so much Dr A.

I could not say better things about Dr. Anderson. He looked after our pets from start to finish, always provided a fair, professional opinion, and never came off as somebody who was just trying to squeeze us for money. He always made sure to follow up on certain situations, and provide honest recommendations and opinions on their health. We were sad to see both of our pets off this year, but through the toughness of the situation, the clinic brought us a lot of comfort. I would 100% recommend Dr. Anderson as a vet and look forward to seeing him with any future pets I may have.
