How to Save Money at Richmond Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Where do I begin… Bugsy came in and had surgery done in September by Dr. McDermott and was healing very nicely when I discovered a lump a month later on his back paw. Dr. Fisher took samples of the lump - we got the call that Bugsy had one of the worst types of Cancer and had to have surgery to have it removed as soon as possible! Dr. McDermott performed a surgery that I am truly unable to articulate into words what a masterful job he performed! This man took an undertaking of that of a plastic surgeon with his expertise. Where this lump was situated was in such a difficult position and place with such little skin, tissue and meat to work with. Dr. McDermott pulled an absolute miracle that Bugsy didn’t lose a toe as it was closer to the joint but he saved him from a second surgery and was absolutely masterful and beyond skilled. He truly exemplifies and embodies grace, tact, diplomacy and is so down to earth. Dr. Fisher is new to Richmond Animal Hospital and they are truly lucky to have an addition like her on board. She exemplifies professionalism, compassion, empathy, knowledge and exudes so much warmth. She truly is a valuable asset. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Fisher for having taken the samples that day for us. The faces of Richmond Animal Hospital that keep operations running smoothly that always greet you with a massive smiles and incredible love and warmth are of Josie, Amanda, Miranda and Michelle. No matter how slammed they get they always make the time for you. They always greet you with the biggest smiles and make you feel all warm and fuzzy like you’re part of the family. They truly take an interest in your fur babies health and well being. They work efficiently, effectively they’re very precise and they both epitomize professionalism, compassion, empathy and emanate love and warmth. At the desk and in the exam rooms you’ll see the techs Brittany, Michael and Chris. These guys work tirelessly and deal with so much but I have only ever seen smiles on their faces. The first time Bugsy met Chris he gave her the runaround told her all kinds of stories and tried to be a thief, by sticking his face in the container and eating all the freeze dried liver off the examination table. She was so patient and so sweet about it and from that day forward seeing her I would fill her in on all his antics -he has many! Chris epitomizes professionalism, patience, warm, and understanding. One of Brittany’s encounters with Bugsy that I remember was one where he was wearing the cone and was pretty amped up. He had a lot to say and wanted out of the room and wanted to go home he’d had enough! We were wrapping things up Brittany had grabbed the meds and Bugsy managed to scrape his cone on the side of the exam table and paint chips went flying. Brittany looked at me I looked at her and at that point we both just started laughing. Earlier on Bugsy had heard the beeping from one of the machines - dog was having a procedure done and Bugsy starting howling in the room. He was just particularly funny that day. Brittany has a very soft and gentle side to her with Bugsy that I’ve seen in the exam room that was so sweet. She is very professional, gentle natured, down to earth, easy to talk to, and very patient. We have seen Michael in the exam room as well as at the desk on weekends. Bugsy has also given Michael the runaround in the exam room and tried to see how to steal treats but didn’t get away with it! Michael is very professional and very knowledgeable, quick on the draw and gets the job done efficiently and effectively. If you have any questions he’s not afraid to find out for you but is a wealth of information. The doctors at this hospital are by far exemplary and superb! Had it not been for them, the techs, front office staff - their team everyone without exception as everyone plays an important role and function. Bugsy wouldn’t be where he is today and almost healed thanks to every one of you. Thank you for everything you have done, are doing and continue to do everyday from the bottom of our hearts ❤️

Excellent service and professional staff. Highly recommended if you live near by Richmond. Other vets were fully booked and the staff at Richmond Animal Hospital was able to book me in urgently on a Monday morning. Dr. Ubi is super friendly, professional and took good care of my dog. Keep it up!

We brought our dog Lulu in today for check up and ran some blood tests to make sure everything was ok since she's been having itchy paws and biting her skin. Lulu is usually very anxious when she's at the vet but she was calm when Michael was addressing her concerns with us today. Michael and Dr. Mcdermott have been extremely informative and helpful during our visit and we can't thank them enough for their expertise!

My grandparents, parents, myself, and now, my kids have been taking our pets here, and we all greatly appreciate the phenomenal service and the kindness of the staff & doctors. I've had some of the happiest, and some of the saddest times of my life at RAH; whether it's our puppies & kittens very first inoculations, or when they have providing our loved ones with palliative care, the love and respect they showed was second to none. Thank you RAH!
