How to Save Money at Catcare Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our journey with Cat Care started 4 years ago when our cat was peeing uncontrollably around the house. Karen took the appointment immediately and discovered our cat had diabetes. Karen has been so helpful. Our last visit was pretty serious and she gave us her cell phone number to text her at anytime with questions or concerns. This morning our other cat was having some issues and she got us in right away. Her compassion and care for our cats is amazing. I would recommend Cat Care to anyone who has a cat. Thank you Karen. We appreciate you.

My elderly diabetic cat has spent another 5-star afternoon at this clinic having his blood levels checked, getting his teeth cleaned, having his thick coat groomed, and receiving the general check-up a chronically-ill senior cat needs. As usual, I could not have asked for better treatment for my dear old boy. I first met this vet when she was just starting out, working in another clinic in my city, and I took in a previous timid old boy with cancer for a check of his condition. She handled him with such gentleness and compassion, and, a few visits later, eased him out of his pain. His successor was a lively, tiny, girl kitten who obviously thought her very own doctor was someone lovable, so when the vet announced the opening of her own clinic, my kitten and I moved to Catcare with her. Three cats and several decades later, I can't imagine any better place or people to treat my cats, the last two of whom were adopted from there as half-grown kittens. Always the best care possible, and always the same kindness and compassion in spite of three very different feline personalities -- the Friendly One, the Aggressive One, and now the Quiet and Polite One. The vet and her staff here handle them all with ease and aplomb. At my age, my sweet old boy may be the last cat I'm able to care for. Having lived with cats since I was born and my parents' cat adopted me as her only kitten, this is not a happy prospect. I am so grateful to this vet and this clinic for the care they are taking to keep my boy with me as long as possible. Disregard those complainers who really only reflect badly on themselves as pet-owners. I've accompanied cats to clinics in five cities in three provinces across Canada for more decades than I like to think. Catcare is the best!

We were adopted by Hunter 5 years ago 😺 After interviewing several clinics in the area we are so thankful we chose Catcare. Never having had a cat, it was important for us to find a clinic that not only cared for Hunter but also provided us with knowledge and education. Dr Karen and her staff are caring, professional, communicative and are always willing to answer our questions and concerns. We made a commitment to provide Hunter with her best life. Going to Catcare is part of that commitment. Thank you Dr Karen and team.

My kitten had a slightly abnormal heartbeat. They could’ve ignored it but they didn’t and instead checked it out each time she visited to make sure it was OK. Also warned me not to use certain ear products to treat my kitten’s chronic ear infections another vet had given me because they had seen cats get permanent damage from it. Also told me they didn’t recommend ear surgery for her and took the time to explain how a cat’s ear anatomy works and why surgery probably wouldn’t help. Glad I got the second opinion! A few years ago I had a cat pass away at the tragic age of only 3 because different vets at different clinics ignored his symptoms and told me his behaviour was “normal” or blamed it all on allergies. These other clinics did not want to find out the cause of his problems and only wanted to sell me bandaid temporary solutions. My baby was suffering all his life and died of kidney failure. Maybe if I had taken him here instead, he’d still be here… So I really appreciate the level of attention this clinic provides. Would recommend to all my friends.

I've been a client of Catcare Veterinary Clinic since the late '90's. Dr. Zutrauen and her staff have provided consistently exceptional medical care to all of my cats, one of which had complex medical issues. Dr. Zutrauen managed to nurse Angus back to health on several occasions and provided him with the best care and support. My husband and I refer to Dr. Zutrauen as a miracle worker, but in truth, I think it's her commitment to keeping abreast of the most current medical journals related to cat care that makes her superior to other vets. I wouldn't consider taking my cats to any other veterinary clinic.
