How to Save Money at Lansdowne Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would never ever come to this veterinarian clinic again. The veterinarian is East Indian, I think. He was horrible to me. I brought my cat in because he was vomiting. I was pretty sad because my cat was not in good condition. I tried explaining this to the veterinarian, he looked at me and said, “Crying does not help you,” then left and came back with a needle. He did not tell me what it was for and injected my cat with it. At this point, I was sobbing. I can’t remember everything the veterinarian said, but he was so cold and so rude; he did not care at all. I ended up going to the lady at the front desk, I was crying at this point. She gave me a pen and paper to write on. It was for the aftercare of my pet. I asked her, “Can you please write it for me?” because there were tears in my eyes, and they were falling on the paper. She looked up at me, grabbed the pen, slammed it on the table, and said, “No, you write it.” I ended up crying and calling my sister because I was so upset about what happened. She told me to turn around. "I'm coming with you, and I’m talking to them." We went back to the front desk, and my sister asked everybody there, “Who made my sister cry?” No one said anything. We ended up going back into the room to talk with the veterinarian. Finally, the veterinarian came into the room, did not say anything, had his arms crossed, and just stared at us. My sister ended up asking him, “What did you inject my cat with?” He looked at me and said, “Explain it to her.” When my sister tried to stand up for me and said “no, you explain it”. He started laughing. Honestly, that whole day at that veterinarian clinic was the worst experience of my life. I don’t know what kind of professional setting it is, but they are completely rude. We ended up asking for an apology. They told us to wait in the front because they were on their lunch break. I will never ever go back there, and I suggest that no one else goes there, too. They probably thought I would never make a review because this happened to me a year ago, but after going to different vets and seeing how nice they are to me and my cat, I could not sit here and say nothing. Hopefully, anyone who does have pet problems will go somewhere better.

My cat Myra had two surgeries here - one for spaying and the other because she swallowed a bell. I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your professionalism and thoughtful approach. The care Myra received has reassured me that your clinic is a trustworthy and reliable place for pet care and the price are reasonable,I've recommended your services to friends who have pets, as I’ve visited several other animal clinics, and yours stands out as the best.

I’ve been taking my cat to this vet for vaccinations and regular check-ups because it’s convenient and the vet is very friendly. However, they always try to charge for extra services I didn’t request, without informing me of the cost beforehand. The wait times are also longer than expected—despite arriving on time, I had to wait 20 minutes. During our recent visit, there was no technician to assist, so I had to help restrain my cat during the treatment, which felt unprofessional. Additionally, most of the front desk staff could be more welcoming. Won’t be returning

I didn't have the greatest experiences here. The front desk was nice in person and so were the staff, but there were a few things that could have gone over a little better. First, I took my puppy for shots and the vet struggled with her a lot. She's a mini schnauzer He could not get the liquid de-worming in her mouth and after a battle for a few minutes he told me to do it at home myself because he was unable to. She was very scared. The vet tech also had to correct him a few times, he didn't seem to know where anything was and the vet tech had to show him better techniques. Just a little concerning. He was very nice though. The second problem was when my puppy was quite sick. I called asking in a panic for some help and they told me there was no time for her until a later date. My puppy didn't have a later date to wait. They did not give me any advice on what else I could do so I called another vet who told me about VCA. I was not their client but they were very happy to help me. Prices at lansdowne are very high and when I found out how expensive it was to get her spayed they again did not provide me with any other advice on where I could take her. I was a student at the time. Once again I called another vet and they told me about Lanark which was amazing. I just feel like money is more important than care at times, but we have since moved on and found a really great vet again. Thank you for the time you did give us, but being a businesswomen, I know it's important to share my views so that businesses can continue to improve and grow.
