How to Save Money at Bridgeway Veterinary Specialists of Vancouver

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cat, Walter, had to have an FHO surgery. Dr. Mark Smith was amazing. He did such a wonderful job on my boy. The surgery was done beginning of October 2024 and Walter is doing so well since then. Nicole, the RVT was great as well. Thank you so much for helping my boy run around and play like the cat he is! Have a happy New Year 🎊

Dr. Jitender (Happy) did so much to keep us informed, investigate, diagnose, and understand our journey with our family pet - Mina (1year old) who had a very unfortunate accident that occurred to her hind left leg four days ago. The contentious efforts in reviewing and exhausting every possible scenario for her initial prognosis was discussed. To then doing his own exam, x-rays and avoiding an unnecessary surgery that would limit Mina immensely and be quite costly. He came up with two plans for Mina for best and worst case scenarios and explained both in detail that were way less invasive in previous diagnosis by other clinics. Honest, compassionate, professional, and genuine from start to finish. Our pets are part of our family, so we’re extremely grateful to the whole team today that helped us. Within two hours of leaving the clinic we received a follow up message checking up on Mina well after business hours. We left with the best case scenario!! Thank you! Joseph & Teresa

we have a dog who has been sick with an cyst in his pancreas. we went to a few vets trying to figure out the best option and the risks involved . once we found Dr Smith it was a no brainer. he was amazing , he was kind, explained everything so we could understand, was so caring and we wish we had gone to him from the beginning. so Mark did the surgery and wow, for a surgery that could have gone either way it was amazing. our dog recovered in no time. they understood that our dog was reactive to being touched so no stitches to remove , the work was so professional we didn't even have to put a cone on my dog. the scar , which was huge is invisible now. our dog is back to being his normal self and it's been over a year of this. thank you Mark and your amazing team. Jagger loves his new found life

We were referred to Dr Smith by our regular vet at Queensborough Veterinary after discovering that or dog, Rocky, had a 6cm by 8cm tumor in his colon that would have been fatal if left untreated. This was not a simple or routine surgery. Dr Smith was excellent about communicating the risks and possibilities. I would say he has a great balance of being able to "tell it like it is" and not sugar-coat anything while still being sensitive to the emotional side of our experience. He made no promises to us, but made us confident that he would do everything he could. They spent a full day operating on Rocky and the difficult surgery was a great success! They removed the tumor completely. The communication and assistance from the Bridgeway team was above and beyond the whole way through including the days after the surgery. It has been two weeks now and Rocky is 100% back to his normal self. Because of Dr. Smith, the Bridgeway team and Dr. Clark and the Queensborough Vet team, we get a chance at many more great years with our boy and we couldn't be more greatful. Thank you.
