How to Save Money at Coastland Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Coastland are not our regular clinic, or doctors, and until yesterday we weren’t even patients. But our family dog had a seriously confusing array of symptoms the other day and our regular doctor couldn’t get us in as it was right at the end of the day. We have clients who use Coastland, I’d heard good things, and I decided to ring them. The front office staff (I spoke with Rose) was a star and squeezed us in before the end of the day, and we had the pleasure of meeting and being treated by Dr. Madison. She was extraordinary. Being dog professionals ourselves, Dr. Madison didn’t talk down to us and made sure to use the clinical language that we understood, but also found a balance while recognizing we are by no means medical clinicians or practitioners, and made sure to talk us through what was going on in understandable laymen’s terms and well thought out metaphors. More than that, she efficiently and professionally reverse engineered the symptoms, gave us a variety of treatment options, was reassuring, calm, knowledgeable, funny, and possibly most importantly of all, she was excellent with Harley, our dog. You couldn’t ask for a better doctor. She was the only doctor we’ve had at Coastland in that it was our only visit, but if you’re looking for a new doctor of veterinary medicine, i strongly encourage you to ask for Dr. Madison by name. Maybe you’ll even get to speak with Rose when booking your appointment, too!

This amazing vet clinic and all their staff have been so amazing to our family. Our daughter had a bearded dragon for 14 years, she got him when she was just 11 months old. He was 2 years old when we rescued him, he sadly passed away at the ripe age of 16 years old which is amazing for a bearded dragon. She took him everywhere and did everything with Mr Liz. Sadly he passed away this past weekend and coastland vet clinic staff were so amazing to allow us to bring him there to be sent off for cremation. They allowed us and our daughters to sit in a beautiful room with the door shut to spend a little time with Mr Liz before saying our goodbyes. And seeing as we are struggling financially at the moment they even allowed us to make payments on his cremation costs. So our daughter will have Mr Liz with her forever. They were so kind to us all and so amazing with our daughters and we couldn't be more grateful for their kindness and payment option.. thank you coastland you are definitely one of the best in Campbell river and surrounding area. Beside manner is a lot better then a few others for sure. We highly recommend this vet clinic. Thank you from all of us. Truly.

Thank you Dr Madison Audeau and coastland team. In November of 2024, our baby got very very sick and we visited Coastland vet and everyone there were very compassionate and kind. However, our girl needed more intensive care and we had to go to emergency hospital, but she didn't make it and we are still grieving over her...But today, when we went to check our mail, we received a very kind and compassionate hand written card from Dr Madison Audeau and the Coastland vet team. Thank you very much, we are very touched by it and this brought us some comfort regarding what had happened. If we ever get an other family member, this is definitely our first choice of veterinary care. Definitely and highly recommend to family and friends. - Paul & Kelly

A huge thank you to Dr. Barry for making my baby girl Desi’s transition from this life to the next go extremely smooth with the most kindness, compassion and sincere regard for her to have the least stressful and loving last moments with her people. Your patience and continued support as I struggled with making the decision to end her pain and suffering meant the world to me and I am so very grateful for making it as comforting and supportive as possible for me. To come to my home and and allow me to spend Desi’s last moments in my arms and allow me to take the time I needed for both myself and her was the kindest and most loving experience I could ever hope for. I am forever grateful💗 Tami

Based on my most recent experiences I feel the need to share my honest opinion. I had been bringing my dogs to Coastland for 10 years and for the most part the visits were positive. The staff at the front end are always so kind and amazing. Some of the vets are good too. However one particular vet lacks compassion and unfortunately assessment skills. The assessments were always very short and diagnoses quick. My last appointment my dog was grossly misdiagnosed with likely brain tumor causing seizures. When I inquired into further assessments I was informed the closest neurologist was in Vancouver (there are several in Victoria) and there would be no point in spending so much money for them to just give them same diagnosis. I ended up going to one and learned my dog had a cureable illness and was very much not a brain tumor or and also not seizures. This vet at Coastland did not do any thorough investigation into her medications or any other possible causes for her presentation. If I had trusted this diagnosis we likely would have put our pup down for having "seizures" several times a day. Turns out she had an infection in her spine and we have been treating her with antibiotics and have not had a seizure like episode since. It is so important to do thorough investigation and not to make quick diagnoses. Not only that the vet was very cold and seemed rushed to move on. We have since found another vet clinic. I'm not saying don't go to coastland, but trust your instints if you don't feel the vet spent enough time learning about your pet and doing research.
