How to Save Money at Dawson Street Veterinary Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
We are with Dr. Darla and the staff for the past ~6.5 years, since we had our puppy. They are always wonderful and professional. We go in for annual checkups and shots. Lately our puppy had to go through a surgery and we felt that her and we were amazingly being cared for in the most sensitive and professional way. We can't recommend Dawson Street Veterinary enough!

I’m extremely shocked and disappointed with my experience at Dawson Street Veterinary Clinic. I rushed in with my dog who was CHOKING and in clear distress, but the vet refused to help because she was “in an appointment.” Instead, they told me to drive to an emergency vet 10 minutes away. However, my car was parked some distance away, meaning it would take at least 30 minutes to get there. Which animal can survive without breathing for 30 mins? I felt she didn't care whatever my dog died or not. Meanwhile, my dog was struggling to breathe, clearly suffering. I pleaded with them to call the emergency clinic, and only after the emergency clinic insisted the vet to proceed basic emergency procedure for chocking, she finally showed up. Even then, she just checked my dog’s mouth with her bare finger. And put him in oxygen box or something. What makes this even more upsetting is that I had been waiting months to become a new patient at this clinic, only because it’s very close to my home. When I ran to the clinic with my suffering dog, I thought to myself, “How lucky I am to have a vet nearby—my dog will be fine soon.” I realize now how naive and wrong I was to trust them. I have no complaints about the assistants and receptionists—they are very kind and helpful ladies. However, the lack of urgency, professionalism, and compassion from the vet was shocking. While I understand that appointments are important, emergencies like chocking should take priority. Their initial refusal to help and inadequate response could have led to a far worse outcome. I cannot recommend this clinic to anyone who might need professional and compassionate care for their pet. *To avoid any debt, I asked first and paid a consultation fee despite the poor and delayed care.

The staff are very nice, but I feel uncomfortable with their approach of constantly referring cases to specialists. I brought two dogs to this clinic. One is a puppy with the flu, and they took a chest X-ray but said it needed to be reviewed by a specialist. Initially, I thought they were just being cautious. However, after a few treatments, the situation worsened. When I consulted another vet, they found that the antibiotics prescribed were too mild for the puppy’s severe illness. Once the puppy received the correct dosage, his condition improved immediately. Despite this, some other issues persisted, and the vet’s only solution was to refer us to a specialist. Similarly, I brought my older dog in for a checkup because of severe dental issues, and I wanted to know if any extractions or cleaning were needed. Again, they told us to see a specialist. This made me question their capabilities. I decided to go to another vet, who provided a thorough checkup and effective treatment. My older dog’s dental issues were finally addressed. Overall, they have great documentation and staff service, and they’re good for regular shots. However, if your dog has a health issue, definitely ask for a secondary opinion.

so weird that the clinic is not accepting new pets for medical checks. Its as though they are anticipating all of their registered pets will fall sick at the same time to keep themselves available for such a situation.

I used to bring my dog Waldo to this veterinarian when I lived in the neighbourhood. He was always treated kindly and gently. We moved to the Sunshine Coast about 2 years ago and so we had to find a new vet in the area.... But it just wasn't the same. Waldo recently passed away of kidney failure at the age of 11. I'd like to sincerely thank the team for their care.
