How to Save Money at VCA Canada Calgary West Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I cannot say enough good things about VCA Calgary West. The people who work at this clinic truly love what they do—they genuinely care about animals and go above and beyond to support their clients. I started bringing my dog Chloe here when she was just a few months old in 2015. She is now 9 years old and, unfortunately, has been struggling with some cancer-related health issues. Originally, I chose VCA Calgary West because it was only five minutes from my home. Now, I willingly drive across the city to continue bringing Chloe here because of the incredible level of care they provide. The entire team—from Dr. Tracy Stevens, who has gone above and beyond to provide the best care, even messaging me late in the evening when she is off duty to share bloodwork results or information from articles she’s read regarding my dog’s care to give me peace of mind, to the front desk staff, Ebony and Morgan, who are always so caring and compassionate, to the amazing vet techs and assistants— I can say confidently that everyone at this clinic is a true animal lover. They have shown such humility, treating every patient and their owners with empathy and respect. Over the past few weeks, I’ve had some emergency situations that required me to visit emergency care clinics and a clinic closer to home that could get us in immediately. Unfortunately, the experiences at those places didn’t compare and sadly; it was clear these places prioritized business and making a large profit over the genuine care and wellbeing of my pet. It really emphasized for me how special the team at VCA Calgary West is. They take the time to make you feel at ease and always strive to provide the best possible care for your pet while being mindful of your budget. Chloe and I have been lucky to have such an amazing clinic supporting us. If you’re looking for a veterinary team that truly loves what they do, I can’t recommend Calgary West highly enough.

We have been taking our pets to Calgary West Animal Hospital for over 20 years now, and have always been impressed with the excellent care they provide. This week, we had to make the heartbreaking decision to have our beloved dog, Finn, euthanized. He was so sick, but we know he's now in a far better place. We can't say enough about the entire team here, but in particular, Dr. Tracy Stevens and Dr. Rosa Esmaeilbeigi. Dr. Tracy has always been so very committed to Finn and his health, calling to check up on him via phone from her home on weekends and evenings, and even meeting us on her day off to deliver his meds. Dr. Rosa was also Finn's vet and she was faced with the sad task of performing his euthanasia. She and the rest of the team were so compassionate and helped us so much in this difficult time. These two are not only outstanding doctors, but also wonderful people, and we will always be grateful for their kindness.

I don’t even know where to start. We ended up at this clinic because our beloved dog was very sick and our regular vet wasn’t able to accommodate an appointment. The staff checked in with us regularly and truly cared about us. My dog ultimately was too sick and we had to say goodbye. Every staff member was so kind, compassionate and supportive through the difficult decisions and process. I’m forever thankful that we landed here during such a vulnerable and sad time. I want to thank each and every staff we cross paths with during our short time at the clinic.
